I've never viewed the insertion of Writer Mary Shelley as a DEtraction from the tale but, rather, a more enveloping technique to remind us that this was HER monster tale on a stormy night. 

The book, after all, does exist.

I haven't checked IMDB for a definitive link, but Elsa and Una delivered some outstanding moments in one of my all-time favorites, 1957's WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION.
