Your Favorite Supernatural/Paranormal Movies
« on: July 16, 2017, 07:17:20 PM »
It's interesting when one attempts to chronicle the history of monster movies, you start to see emerging patterns through the years, epochs, if you will. The 50s had their creature features and giant mutants, the 80s had their slashers. The early 2000s was an epoch of reboots and so-called "torture porn." And now, (and I admit to not being a horror movie historian, thought that would be awesome,) it seems we are currently in an epoch of supernatural/paranormal movies. And to be frank, I'm loving it. Franchises like Insidioius, the Conjuring and Ouija are becoming more frequent. And in stark contrast to the splatter and gore of the last decade, these movies are more subtle, opting for atmosphere over viscera, which I greatly enjoy. They are not without their faults, obviously. They are prone to age old cliches (family moving into new house, dogs wary of said house, closing doors and hushed whispers) but all in all, it's been a blast.

What are some of the better supernatural movies that have come out recently, in your opinion? By supernatural, I'm typically referring to ghosts, demons, curses, etc.

Interested to get your opinion on such movies, and maybe even a few suggestions.

I'm a big fan of Ghost Story. I know it predates the modern era (1981?), but I think it holds up we'll. The idea of old men sitting around telling ghost stories whilst there in the middle of one is superb. Every time I come upon a car when I'm out scuba diving I think about the scene where the car is pulled from the lake and the girl's body pops out! Gives me chills not associated with the water temperature....

Just watched "The Autopsy of Jane Doe." Excellent supernatural thriller imo.

 "Lights Out" pretty good.

I'm a sucker for anything with witches. The subject of witchcraft just screams Halloween to me, so when fall creeps around I always lean in that direction. Tops being The City of the Dead a.k.a. Horror Hotel (1960), Night of the Eagle a.k.a. Burn, Witch, Burn! (1962) and The Witch (2015). There are a ton of others, but those are on regular rotation for me.

I agree, Autopsy of Jane Doe was superb!! Weirdly enough, I also liked Rob Zombie's Lords of Salem. It built a cool Suspiria type atmosphere.

Also, while not a film, I think that The Exorcist T.V. series is very creepy!!

I almost picked up The Autopsy of Jane Doe last week, but I didn't know anything about it, and I've been burned too often on horror films that sound good, but turn out to be utter trash.

I've been hearing good things about "Jane Doe," though. How's the atmosphere? That's always my biggest concern with horror movies.

I'm definitely a witch fan, though I really disliked The Witch (2015). Too artsy for my taste.

Definitely, witches are a near synonym with Halloween.

Very creepy atmoshpere. Takes place inside small town home/coroner's office. The vibe is pretty eerie. There's a sadness to the father/son team as well. I thought it was well done.

*spoiler alert: there is a pet death. I hate that in films. I can watch humans ripped to pieces all day, but cant stand seeing bad things happen to our furry friends.

I love the CONJURING films and am a big fan of Vera Farmiga. Those in turn caused me to check out the INSIDIUS series and I enjoyed those as well.  I liked ANNABELLE too, but the CONJURINGs are my favorites.  Also liked 1408.

Those mentioned above are more recent, but considering from 1970 on I would list THE EXORCIST, THE OMEN, LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE, PHANTASM, THE SENTINEL and BURNT OFFERINGS.  I'm sure there are more as these are just off the top of my head.
