I think the bad response to 2012 The Woman In Black just says it all.  Not many appreciate slow moving gothic atmospheric things that make you think.

I thought that got a great response from audiences?!  I remember hearing only great things about it, and I loved it.

The audiences I was with didn't like it in the least.  I was so glad when it was put on DVD so I could enjoy it alone.

Well, it inspired a sequel and was a lead-up to The Conjuring, which was extremely well-received, made in almost the exact same vein.  The Conjuring is a fantastic example of what horror can do.
