Rating the Frankensteins: Universal and Hammer
« on: May 27, 2017, 08:29:48 AM »
As a sister thread to the DRACULA one, the premise stays the same: how would you place the films of each studio in order of your personal preference?

The major difference in the studios' approach here may influence many members: Universal focused on the adventures of the Monster, while Hammer chose to place emphasis on the Baron in their films.

UNIVERSAL:

FRANKENSTEIN(1931)
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN(1935)
SON OF FRANKENSTEIN(1939)
GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN(1942)
FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN(1943)
HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN(1944)
HOUSE OF DRACULA(1945)
ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN(1948)

HAMMER:

CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN(1957)
REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN(1958)
EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN(1964)
FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN(1967)
FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED!(1969)
HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN(1970)
FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL(1972)
DARK SHADOWS:

David Collins: "Dead people dont just get up and walk around.."

Sarah Collins: "Sometimes they do."

Again, as with the Rating Dracula thread, I've copy/pasted your list and assigned individual 1-10 ratings to each film based on my enjoyment of them. Of course with this method it's easy to tell my order of preference by my ratings. Here goes:

UNIVERSAL:

FRANKENSTEIN(1931)  8/10
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN(1935)  8/10
SON OF FRANKENSTEIN(1939)  7/10
GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN(1942)  6/10
FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN(1943)  7/10
HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN(1944)  7/10
HOUSE OF DRACULA(1945)  6/10
ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN(1948)  7/10

HAMMER:

CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN(1957)  8/10
REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN(1958)  9/10
EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN(1964)  7/10
FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN(1967)  7/10
FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED!(1969)  8/10
HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN(1970)  6/10
FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL(1972)  8/10

In general I slightly prefer the Hammer Frankenstein films to the Universal ones simply because of Peter Cushing's crazed driven Baron. He's one of my favorite genre characters. The Universals are more important historically, but as good as they are I still have more fun watching the Hammers with Cushing's Baron.

These aren't ranked on quality so much as enjoyability. Honestly, it's very hard to give any of these movies a low ranking.

Frankenstein
Bride of Frankenstein
Abbott and Costello
House of Frankenstein
House of Dracula (sure he's barely in the House movies but if I were to rank movies in general)
Son of Frankenstein
Ghost of Frankenstein

Monster from Hell
Curse
Created Woman
Must be Destroyed
Evil of
Horror of
Revenge of

This is how I would rate them for "my own personal" preference.  I tend to favor the Universal films in the order in which they were released, even though that is not the order in which I saw them. I did see Frankenstein 1931 first, then Bride of Frankenstein 1935 afterwards. That was it -- I was in love, and what a romance it has been. The Hammer Films showed us a lot of what the Universal Films didn't. They also gave us blood dripping color too. I love them all, both Universal & Hammer.

Oh crap, just realized after all this time that I forgot Meets the Wolf Man. Uhh, I think I'd tie it somewhere around the House movies. Honestly, I look back at my list now and I can't fully agree with it anymore. But close enough.
