Rating the Draculas: Universal and Hammer
« on: May 24, 2017, 05:59:00 PM »
Everyone has their own particulars when it comes to favorites in horror or sci-fi. Fans of Universal classics and Hammer horrors are the same.

Rate in your own estimate the ranking of  the following films:

UNIVERSAL

DRACULA(1931)
DRACULA(Mexican version 1931)
DRACULA'S DAUGHTER(1936)
SON OF DRACULA(1943)
HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN(1944)
HOUSE OF DRACULA(1945)
ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN(1948)

HAMMER

HORROR OF DRACULA(1958)
BRIDES OF DRACULA(1960)
DRACULA, PRINCE OF DARKNESS(1966)
DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE(1968)
TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA(1969)
SCARS OF DRACULA(1970)
DRACULA AD 1972(1972)
THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA(1973)
LEGEND OF THE SEVEN GOLDEN VAMPIRES(1974)

Remember there are no wrong or right answers and let's try to be respectful of others' choices. Have fun with this! ;)
DARK SHADOWS:

David Collins: "Dead people dont just get up and walk around.."

Sarah Collins: "Sometimes they do."

My own selections:

Universal:

Dracula(1931)
Son Of Dracula(1943)
Dracula(Mexican version 1931)..if this had been with Lugosi, Frye and Van Sloan instead of the cast it had, it would probably outrank FRANKENSTEIN as a masterpiece due to it's better direction and use of sets..
Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein(1948)
Dracula's Daughter(1936)
House Of Dracula(1945)
House Of Frankenstein(1944)

Hammer:

Horror Of Dracula(1958)
Brides Of Dracula(1960)
Prince Of Darkness(1966)
Taste the Blood Of(1969)
Has Risen From the Grave(1968)
AD 1972(1972)
Scars(1970)
Satanic Rites(1973)
Legend Of(1974)
DARK SHADOWS:

David Collins: "Dead people dont just get up and walk around.."

Sarah Collins: "Sometimes they do."

UNIVERSAL

DRACULA(1931)  7/10
DRACULA(Mexican version 1931)  7/10
DRACULA'S DAUGHTER(1936)  6/10
SON OF DRACULA(1943)  6/10
HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN(1944)  7/10
HOUSE OF DRACULA(1945)  6/10
ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN(1948)  7/10

HAMMER

HORROR OF DRACULA(1958)  8/10
BRIDES OF DRACULA(1960)  8/10
DRACULA, PRINCE OF DARKNESS(1966)  7/10
DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE(1968)  7/10
TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA(1969)  6/10
SCARS OF DRACULA(1970)  7/10
DRACULA AD 1972(1972)  7/10
THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA(1973)  7/10
LEGEND OF THE SEVEN GOLDEN VAMPIRES(1974)  7/10

I just rated them on a scale of 1-10. For me the Universal Dracula films are on the average a little weaker than say the Frankenstein films or the Creature films. The Hammer Dracula films are on par with most of the main Hammer fare. These ratings are my personal opinion of how much I enjoy each film and not an indication of historical importance or technical quality.

Hmm, now I can't remember how all the Hammer movies go but with Universal I can give:
1.Dracula/Cuban Dracula (they are equals)
2.House of Frankenstein
3.House of Dracula
4.Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein
5.Son of Dracula
6.Dracula's Daughter

And with Hammer I just think of them more as
the original
the second one without Dracula
all the ones with Dracula but no Van Helsing
the two ones that take place in the 70's
and Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires

Not sure I can order the Hammer ones but I'd certainly give 7 Golden Vampires a much higher ranking than most just because it's epicly weird and funny

This is a rough one... but I'll try.

UNIVERSAL DRACULA SERIES

1. Dracula - will always be my favorite, despite the creakiness of the second half. The first horror film I ever saw and began my lifelong fascination with one Mr. Lugosi.
2. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
3. Son of Dracula
4. House of Frankenstein
5. Dracula's Daughter
6. House of Dracula
7. Spanish Drac

HAMMER DRACULA SERIES

1. Horror of Dracula
2. Taste the Blood of Dracula
3. Dracula Prince of Darkness
4. Dracula AD 1972
5. Scars of Dracula
6. Dracula has Risen from the Grave
7. Satanic Rites of Dracula
8. The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires
9. Brides of Dracula

I thought it was Mexican Dracula. What makes it Cuban? Just curious (I was born in Havana).

It is Mexican. Filmed on Universal's Dracula sets with an all Mexican cast.

For the Universal films, I'm talking about the character of Dracula in each film, if it's a monster rally type film.

Universal:

Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein
Dracula
Dracula (Spanish)
Son of Dracula
Dracula's Daughter
House of Dracula
House of Frankenstein

Hammer:

Horror of Dracula
Brides of Dracula
Dracula: Prince of Darkness
Taste the Blood of Dracula
Dracula Has Risen from the Grave
Dracula AD 1972
The Satanic Rites of Dracula
Scars of Dracula
Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires

I know that it's neither Universal or Hammer, but where does The Return of the Vampire rate in these lists? I argue that it is the immediate sequel to Dracula.

It's a great vampire film, and we get Lugosi as a vampire, without so much of the awkward stage-bound look of the 1931 Dracula that takes place after the scenes aboard the ship. I just don't see it as a sequel to Dracula.
What ever happened to my Transylvania Twist?

Wow, probably should have looked at this post a long time ago to explain when it was still relevant.
I just said Cuban because that's where the copy that survives today was found.
And no, it actually isn't an all Mexican cast. Carlos was from Spain. So was the guy who played Renfeild. Then the guy who played Johnathan Harker was from Argentina. I could look up more but that's not really the point. It wasn't made just for Mexico. It was made for all the Spanish speaking countries that they distributed it to. So saying it's Cuban is just as accurate.
