Diener Industries figures!
« on: May 12, 2017, 11:30:03 AM »
We don't have a comprehensive thread here on the various figures issued by Diener Industries over the years!

Among the figures issued by Diener were Space Creatures including robots and spaceships, Monsters and Dinosaurs. Each figure was issued in multiple colours such as orange, yellow, green, blue and brown.

They were issued singly as toys with McDonald's Happy Meals beginning in the late seventies or as carded rack toys:

Diener reused the molds and repopped the figures as soft rubbery ones, hard plastic or even pencil erasers - in other words as whatever they thought they could flog that particular year.

So tell us what you know about the various Diener sets and figures and about your real life experiences with these things! And show us pics of what you have (ideally with a good explanation)!

The set of 6 larger Diener Dinosaurs:

There is also a set of smaller dinos that look cooler than the larger set. I have them but I'll have to eventually dig them out to make a pic of to post. I couldn't find a net pic of the smaller ones.

Are they hard plastic, or are they soft and rubbery?

Rubbery.

Though the Diener rubbery figures were marketed as erasers I'll bet not many were used for that. Why mess up a cool figure when you could just use a plain eraser? Most kids probably agreed with that which is why there are still so many of these in the marketplace.

So you're saying that the soft and rubbery category is the same as the eraser category?

 ???

To my understanding, yes.

I only have a set of the Space Creatures (Monsters), and the dinos (small & large), and I'm by no means a Diener expert. But, the rubbery ones were intended as erasers according to the packaging in the photos posted above.

Does anyone know if they were ever made in plastic?

All the ones I've seen for sale are rubber ones.

This is what the Minifigures.blogspot has to say about the Space Creatures specifically:

Quote from: Minifigures
These sculpts can now be found in a number of different colors and at least 3 types of plastic, comparatively soft (retail release), medium (Happy Meal release), and hard (more recent incarnations).

Evidently Diener Industries produced quite a few other cool series of figures used as premiums within McDonald's Happy Meals. Here's a pic of a wild set of Mythological Creatures:

I derived much of the info on the Diener figures in my opening post from the blogspot of the Retroist:

Retroist - Diener Space Collection.

Retroist - Diener Monster Collection.

Here's a good drawing of the Diener Space Creatures by Sean Hartter from the Retroist's blogspot:

I wonder which soft ones I have, since I don't have any others to compare them to?

Evidently the light purple colour is found only among the erasers. A light purple figure would therefore enable one to differentiate between the soft plastic Happy Meal figures and the ones subsequently issued on cards as erasers.
