New Universal Monsters Logos
« on: May 01, 2017, 10:46:28 PM »
Universal is in the process of rolling out a rather sizable marketing campaign for the Universal Monsters.  This is all a result of the new Mummy movie, you can be assured.

Here are some the newest logos that they are using, some of which are already appearing on products.  I will post new ones as I find them, and you should too!

New Universal Monsters "Frankenstein" Logo:

When I first glanced at it, I thought it was Herman Munster.  That old "doesn't look a thing like Karloff" joke is probably suitable here.  However, when I actually looked at it, I saw the Frankenstein Monster.  Probably not the best approach to take in marketing, but hey...

This is the new UM logo:

Not all that iconic, but you can certainly read it better than the Karloff "coin" logo that debuted over ten years ago...  So, it's kind of a marketing win.  However, I liked the coin and will miss it.

The new monster designs:

Dracula is not included and neither is Wolf Man.  Curious considering these don't look much like real monsters.  A generic Dracula and Wolf Man would fit right in here.  Wonder what became of the Chaney lawsuit?  It will be interesting to see if these are the new style guide character designs for marketing purposes, or if they are just part of the new style guide.  I'd tend to think this is one motif that merchandisers can use while there will be more traditional monster designs also made available.  Universal would be wise to have multiple motifs available: this one, which I call Art Deco Monsters, a realistic one with actual character likenesses, and maybe a new line art lineup.

On social media, Universal is releasing all kinds of film clips and stills with the new logos.  Included are the Big 8.  Dracula is very prominent in this marketing, which is interesting considering the studio's relationship with Lugosi.  It will be interesting to see what else develops and how their marketing translates into merchandising over the course of the next few years (should The Mummy do well).

What do you think?

I'll take the old "Franken coin " any day over this corporate slop. The monsters look like bad Halloween cut outs and the lettering reminds me of Star Wars (does anyone need to be refreshed on my feelings towards Star Wars?). Thumbs waaay down on this one, Roger.

I don't care what they do going forward. I've got the original classic monster movies to watch, and will NOT see any of "the-sure-to-be-awful" re-imagining of our beloved monsters.

Still cant get into these new logos. Cant really explain why, just very unappealing to me. Makes me think of 90s artwork for some reason.  As a "keep things in the original packaging" collector (which is a different thread lol), these designs alone might keep me from buying much. It would really have to be something special, and I might rethink keeping the packaging on new stuff...
but for the rest of you, I hope they have LOTS of new goodies for you!!! Fingers crossed! :) :)

We'll at least he didn't have to go through the embarrassing "modernization" the others did.

That's why I want to know what became of the Chaney suit.  I find his omission interesting.  Perhaps he will be revealed at some later point, but it's interesting that both he and Dracula are AWOL, considering Frankenstein, Dracula, and Wolf Man are the most famous of the monsters and the most popular (along with Creature).

I'm still miffed about the exclusion of the Monolith Monsters in the new logo.

They are OK with me.  Don't like the exclusion of Drac and Wolfie and the Creature could have been a little less mechanical-looking.  Reminds me of the Robot Kong out of Japan some years back.

I'm with Mike, filled them with product and I won't mind the cards at all.

On the fence with these. Looks like pop art from the 70's. I am sure it was a way for them to get around the actors likeness to stop royalties.  What are going to put them on? I saw nothing coming up except for the TMNT figure that change to the monsters updated versions. Maybe merchandise from the new Mummy? That's already a no sale for the movie and merchandise from that fiasco.  Just another Universal nothing for collectors again. They need to put us in charge of merchandising.

He looks a little tubby to me.  Kong is supposed to be a bit tubby.  Creech... not so much.
