Nan Gray and Vincent Price in publicity still for THE INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS(1940)

Vincent Price played the Invisible man twice.  First in this movie, and later in A&CMF.  I understand this is considered a Horror -Science fiction film. So would this have been Price's first appearance in a Horror movie?

Unless you count his appearance in 1939's TOWER OF LONDON with Karloff and Rathbone, yes. :)

The 1939 film might be considered a horror film, but some have called it a quasi-horror film.  It always struck me more as a historical drama.  The 1962 version, which once again had both Price and Karloff, played up the horror elements.

Karloff doesnt appear in the 1962 version of Tower..

Wrightson's cover for Scream Door #1 (1971) depicts a very Uniesque Frankenstein Monster (with furry vest ala Son Of...).

ALWAYS MONSTERING...

It always struck me more as a historical drama.

It is, but with a cast of future horror movie veterans (and one already a vet), it's no wonder is has been adopted by horror fans and included, by Universal, in horror home video packages. The Hunchback of Notre Dame was historical fiction, too. It just has that one deformed guy.

It was taken in color and there are a few other photos from the time of production in color as well; some ended up in an article in LIFE magazine at the time.
