Ok, saw the Mummy tonight. I give it 3/5 stars. Overall fun and entertaining film.

Likes:
The mummy design
undead Knights Templars
underwater tomb scenes
Russel Crowe as Jekyll/Hyde
crashing plane scene
Creature from the Black Lagoon easter egg *super stoked when I saw that

Critiques:
still not a huge fan of Tom Cruise as the lead
too jokey at times, stick with monster/horror vibe
actions scenes over the top at times---seems like every film has to have disaster scenario
not sure if i like obvious American Werewolf in London ripoff story line

I agree with all of the above.. :)
DARK SHADOWS:

David Collins: "Dead people dont just get up and walk around.."

Sarah Collins: "Sometimes they do."

Interesting article over at Variety. It appears that Tom Cruise had a lot more influence than was previously known, and it turns out that not only are concerns about the film being a Tom Cruise vehicle not entirely unfounded, but the blame may in fact fall at Cruise's feet as it seems he quite deliberately steered the film onto a more "star-driven" course to stroke his own ego.

This was exactly how I felt upon viewing this; the film has more emphasis on his character than the Mummy herself and I kept thinking that this had been hijacked into being another Cruise vehicle.. :(

Just got back from seeing The Mummy (2017) and I liked it, but I can't remember a movie that I didn't enjoy.

Sorry, I meant that I do not think I have ever been disappointed by a movie on the big screen. It is a different story when I am watching at home. I also have not seen as many movies as some of you here.

Man oh man does that new Transformers look rough. I still have no idea what it's about. Why are they acting like Optimus Prime going bad is so surprising? He's gotten more and more bloodthirsty and anti-human with each film. It's waaay out of character for anyone who knows him OUTSIDE the films, but it's also sooo consistent with how he has been portrayed WITHIN them. So it's insulting to long time fans and pointless when it comes to the films themselves since it's the logical next step of a clearly defined downward character arc.

Dang it, I'm sorry. Didn't mean to go on a Transformers rant, of all things. :-X

Okay, I admit I liked the mummy. I even ended up seeing it twice. Once with my son who also enjoyed it. And once with my daughter who was so so about it. I always enjoy underwater sequences and I found the underwater skeletal Templars highly entertaining. I really hope the Dark Universe comes together and that my son and daughter can introduce these classic monsters to their children when and if they have any!

That's why I stopped watching those films.

Just awful stuff...all made by a director who doesn't give a fig about the franchise.

So---let me see if I understand Universal Studios's mentality...

Dracula Untold cost 70 million to make and about 20 million in marketing ...90 million.

It made 220 million, and another 18 million in dvd/blu sales....238 million.

238-90 is 148 million profit. It was considered unworthy of inclusion in the Dark Universe.

Mummy cost 125 million to make, and 150 million spent on marketing and advertisement. 275 million. It has made 345 million domestic/global combined. 345-275 is 70 million. Let's be gracious and say it makes 20 million in dvd/blu sales and another 20 before its no longer at the marquee. That's gonna give it 110 million profit.

Last time I checked, 148 million was more than 110 million. So...why isn't Dracula Untold the beginning of this whole Dark Universe thing? It made more money, with less "star power".

The 2010 Wolfman on the other hand (even with star power) tanked abysmally apparently. $150 million budget not counting marketing and advertising.  Vs. 169 million globally and dvd/blu combined. So it really under performed. Despite winning Rick Baker and crew an  Oscar, lol.

I really wish they would just incorporate Dracula Untold and even The Wolfman into this Dark Universe universe. If there is even a Dark Universe forthcoming after the Mummy didn't do as well as they had hoped.

At this point they may as well backtrack...again..and bring in Luke Evans; maybe the tie-in to Dracula Untold would bring them the desired box office.

Dracula Untold is actually not that bad of a film.
