Pretty sure ebay is mostly loonies now
« on: July 18, 2016, 07:06:53 PM »
I have all but stopped selling anything on ebay because of whack a doodle creepozoids. Every now and again, I buy something. When a dealer puts a "best offer" up, I usually take that as a sign they are willing to negotiate the price. I have seen dealers put remarkably high prices on things only to settle down to a more reasonable price through the process of haggling and complete the sale.

Everybody feels like they win.

An item came up that I had a bit of an interest in....but not that much since it had damage. I made an offer...because the listing stated BIN or best offer.

The offer was denied....and then the dealer apparently became upset, and raised the price on the item by almost $100.00. Now I have no interest in buying anything from them. Ever. At any price. Not because they declined the offer...but the behavior afterwards. Do some people not understand the best offer option, and how thats supposed to work, lol? To invite haggling? Oy. ::) Its not as if I offered them 50 cents for the thing.

At any rate: I think I am done collecting. Except for the stuff Martin sends me or new stuff from nameless faceless corporations.  Because there are far too many unbalanced people in this world now. I am afraid if I bought anything from them now, it would be sent with a vial of complimentary anthrax. Crazy ebay craziness.

Ya, sometimes there is just some strange things going on there. S while back, I remember a figure that was for sale for an inflated price. No body seems to want it and it went unsold for a while. The guy ended up raising the price and stating that he has raised the price on purpose because it was worth it and it should go to a serious collector or something.

Also, I have told the story of the cheap Halloween clown story before. The condensed version is teh guy had a Halloween decoration to sell. He claimed it was vintage and started the bidding at like $600. It didn't sell so he lowered it to $400, then $300 over the period of a month or so. Finally with no takers, I think he took it off and then relisted it for starting bid of $1. I mean an original starting price of like $600, then within 2 months, down to $1. That's just crazy. Turns out, the decoration was not vintage. In fact, it was a relatively new decoration sold at seasonal Halloween stores within the last 3 years. On top of that, it was the second issuing of the decoration which didn't even have as good a paint job as the first edition.

Any time you deal with so many people there are bound to be incompetence and shenanigans sooner or later. I had rather deal with the occasional unpleasantness and get things I want as to tap out and do without. As collectors we may get annoyed sometimes but we're never really done.

My only contention with EBAY or the seller(s), is, overcharging the shipping price in order to balance-out
the item being sold.

Ebay certainly contributes to shipping gouges as they take 10% of the price charged for shipping as well as the 10% they take of the finalized sale. So--if it costs $7.70 to mail something, the seller now has to charge $8.40 to cover the shipping. Not counting gas, shipping materials, tape, etc.....so shipping is lose/lose for all parties involved, lol.

That's 'cause if they don't, people will try to get as much of their profit from their shipping charge as they can in order to not pay some of the fee. ;D

I usually ignore listings which overcharge for shipping.

eBay is full of stinky listings. You just pick a fair one and proceed. A buyer has to be selective.  ;)

Surprisingly, I've truly had a great experience with eBay since I started in 1998.  I agree about price charging  by eBay, but truly, it's the only game in town.  I have given up on Hakes and Heritage because of the crazy charges there.  My biggest horror story is sending a mint Buck Rogers Captain Action and getting it back with a broken string holding a boot on.  I went through hell with the Post Office even opening the package in front of the manager.  it was so expensive they said it wasn't their fault.  I agonized and was pissed over the whole deal.  I put it back up and got a higher bid ... go figure.  All in all, despite of price gouges and unethical dealers, still, again. eBay is the only game in town.

Precisely. Ebay introduced the policy of levying their fee on the item's price include the shipping charge because shysters selling items had taken to selling objects at a low price but then charging ridiculous amounts for shipping in an effort to evade Ebay fees, e.g. Buy It Now for $5 but shipping of $25. This was also very irritating for buyers.

I've been on ebay since 1998 too, and the vast majority of experiences are good.   I agree on the nature of misunderstanding what a MAKE OFFER option means to some sellers.   A buyer has no idea what you're willing to take on something and a lowball offer isn't usually meant to be insulting but I think it's the nuance of how the communication is handled.   Someone reaching out to me with "You must be smoking crack to ask that much,  I'll give you 30% of your asking price and you're lucky to get that" isn't going to be as effective as something a little more polite.  Personally I almost never use a BIN opting instead for the $1 start price and no reserve on anything-- let the market dictate the value, and in all the years I've been on there I've only been burned as a seller maybe three times using this method.   One time eBay's servers went down (this was some time ago) and I had several big ticket items closing the night it shuttered.

But yeah, there are a lot of nuts out there.   Recently a guy had an item up BIN for $500 with a make offer option, I countered with$400 thinking he'd come back at $450 and we'd be off and running, well the program instantly rejected any offer below $480-- what's the point in even having offers as an option?

Didn't they give people a "do over" on that?

I don't get as many seller countered an offer as I used to.  Some just reject and leave it at that.  I"m not sure they really want to sell their item.

I've encountered a few like that.  I look for items that have been up for a long time or even relisted. I can sometimes get those for a third of the asking price.  Lots of people are listing items from a deceased relative or because they are moving.  They want to sell fast.

I've mostly met some really nice people on eBay - even made a few friends.. I first met ToyRanch on eBay.  He got me to join the UMA.
