Perhaps the most highly prized, and expensive, Aurora model kit of them all these days is the Gigantic frankenstein:



It was a sales flop when released in 1964 because quite simply its $4.95 price induced a case of sticker shock in potential buyers. Since it wasn't selling briskly, Aurora didn't make many and therefore it's very tough to find these days.

The James Bama painting on the box adds immensely to the kit's desirability with collectors:

Hi Hep.  Back in the 60's,  I remember seeing a Big Frankie in Haines Hobby shop here in Reading, it was put on top of the high showcase where the other kits were, just collecting dust, one day I went in, and it wasn't there anymore. This was a few years after the kit was released, probably around 1968 or so, I don't know if someone actually bought it, or it was stored away, or just thrown out. The high price tag was surely a factor in low sales, but also, at least to me when the kit came out, it was a "comical" take on Frankenstein that I didn't really care for, much the same as the monster hot rods.  It was Frankenstein, but in a funny abstract form that was more toy-like, to me the box was the best part. The Famous Monsters 1965 yearbook also shares the same image, along with maybe a poster and puzzle that came out years later. It is now an expensive kit to find, as you mentioned.  On a rarity scale though, I'd much rather have my MIB Godzilla's Go Cart back, or even a King Kong's Thronester. Next to impossible to find compared to Big Frankie.  Non-Aurora kits of characters are really tough too, such as the UPC kits of the Ultraman series, probably just about all of the early Marusan kits of science fiction type, and the Okamoto kits of Frankenstein and the Wolfman that can be seen in Kirks book.
