Just try asking him nicely.

I think I'd have better luck on ebay!  ;D (And I haven't seen one on ebay for years.)

I originally posted this in the wrong thread. It more appropriately belongs here or in the Roth thread.

Here's a photo of the binder containing my own Topps Shock Theater and Shock Theatre cards.

The fifty card set was first tested in limited distribution Stateside in 1975, and then released with markedly different pictures and completely different captions in the U.K. When the cards were test marketed in the States in 1975, it was under the name Shock Theater. Here are scans of some of mine:

The Shock Theater set had two number 17 cards but no number 47 card. Some of the images were changed and most of the captions ended up being altered and the set was then released in the U.K. in 1976 under the name Shock Theatre. Both number 17 cards were changed to number 47 for the U.K. release.  :o

Here are scans from my Shock Theatre set:

Here are pics of three more of the Hasbro Painting by Numbers sets:

Creature from the Black Lagoon

Mummy

Phantom of the Opera

I understand that these three were part of a second series and are even tougher to find today than the Dracula, Frankenstein and Wolf Man sets from Hasbro's first series.

Same with the Mystery Games (and same characters). 2nd series and harder to find.

That's a great shot of Horrible Hamilton!

Here's an old pic of my extra one that I bought loose a few years ago along with the other HI stuff on the shelf:

I paid $300 for that Horrible Hamilton because it's the best condition one I've ever seen (well, since I was 5 years old anyway). There is nothing broken or missing, the colors are bright, there is no discoloration anywhere on the piece, and it works perfectly with the string returning all the way (I just ran it across the floor  ;D). The eBay seller I bought it from packed it very well and it arrived unscathed. I also purchased the Dwarf Tank, Mosquito Jeep, and the set of 6 Blue Defenders from the same seller at the same time so he shipped them all together. The other pieces were relatively cheap, being less than $200 for all, but I was willing to pay a premium to finally get a "like new" Horrible Hamilton. Like you wrote, he is "the star of the show". Literally every one I've seen since listed on eBay (probably 20 or more) have condition problems ranging from extensive damage to not working anymore. Usually they have something missing like antennae, eyes, nose, or even the pull-string, and they still sell for high prices. Truly high grade examples must be very rare since they're hard plastic and easily broken.

Nice! The Stanleys are pretty scarce. They were like the poor man's Eerie Pubs back in the day but nowadays they're much harder to find than Eerie Pubs mags and every bit as cool in a muted less sensationalistic way. I grabbed all the Stanleys I could a few years ago when all those mags were cheap but they're quite pricey these days.

absolutely, when everyone was going gaga for superheros a few years back i was plucking up these babies every chance i got for next to nothing. like you said - the prices on these have gone up quite a bit. i'm glad i put my collection together when i had the chance.

and don't get me wrong, i LOVE warren publications...marvel monster mags too.
but skywalds...stanleys...eeries... were just a whole nother flavor.

I agree, brother! When I seriously went after monster mags a few years ago I finished the important runs of Warrens and Marvels first, then the Skywalds (love 'em!) except for the two Crime Machine issues. I picked up what Eerie Pubs and Stanleys I could along the way but to this day I only have around a third of the Eerie Pubs and 14 Stanleys. TBH I'm also missing several issues of Savage Sword Of Conan from Marvel as well, but they published 235 issues! I have most of 'em including all the early issues and the scarce last few issues. Lotsa monster mags out there to get. I have over 3K and I still need a bunch.  ::)

I've learned to be happy with what I have. My window of opportunity for buying them cheap has long passed and I'm out of Mylar mag bags and acid-free boxes so at this point I'm calling it good and anything else I pick up is gravy. Regarding the Warrens I still need Eerie #1 and the lousy Saha book, the Westerns and a couple of Screen Thrills Illustrated. I'll probably never own Eerie #1 because I won't drop a grand or two for one, and I simply refuse to give over 20 books for that crappy Saha book (which sells for $500+). The others are doable so maybe I'll get around to 'em some time.  :-\

BTW, my favorites to this day are the three issues of Web Of Horror (Sproul) with all the killer work by Wrightson, Jones, Kaluta, and Reese.  :)

Web Of Horror #s 1-3 (Sproul, 1969/1970):

My Web Of Horror issues I posted earlier in this thread since I mentioned them above. Not high grade but not bad (in the FN to FN/VF range). Jaw dropping early art by Wrightson, Kaluta, Reese, and others. Issues 1 and 2 have Jeff Jones covers. #3 sports Wrightson's first pro cover.
