Also for anyone else who's a fan of GB2, here's this entertaining I-Mockery.com article written for it a few years back. Definitely an enjoyable read if you like the sequel, as I always have. Seems in more recent times it's gotten a somewhat better reception.

I try to catch it when all of the ghosts are released.  I like that scene.

Do you mean in the first movie when the containment unit is shut down? That's definitely a memorable sequence, among scores of others in the original two movies. The bit with the zombie cab driver would always freak me out as a kid.

Yes. I also like it in the new version, too.

I still need to see the reboot. While I'm not really interested in it, I feel compelled to give it just one watch to see how it is.

There are many 'event' parallels (university locales for the 'doctors') but the cameos were decent, and the actresses did everything as expected.  The direct comparisons will never match Bill Murray lampooning Aykroyd for his challenge to the librarian-ghost.  I did my best to purge myself of expecting those possible parallels (frankly, nothing can match those original scenes) and this allowed me to lower my expectations considerably.

I wasn't disappointed.  It was decent enough, and just different enough to allow me to skip past the obvious attempted parallels.

And I kept remembering, "At least Pus Van Zant wasn't shooting a shot-for-shot remake..."

Well stated.

I'll see if I can rent the reboot from my nearby library this week or so, I probably can. I feel compelled to give it a shot now, for some reason.

Low expectations/ enjoy it for what it is.  My 2 cents.

I rented the reboot from my library but unfortunately the copy I got was bad and stopped playing mid-way through, after the concert sequence. I hate when that happens. I'll probably just try to catch it on Netflix when I start my free trial soon, as I plan to to watch Stranger Things Season 2 there.

What I saw of it, well, it wasn't as bad as expected but not good, either. Jokes fell flat, no scares or humor as with the first two, visuals and ghost designs are very cartoony-looking unlike those of the first two where they looked real. When it came to the new characters, I find I actually didn't mind Erin or Jillian, but could've easily done without the other two. The rampant stereotyping was pretty annoying and even insulting in some instances. I feel I can't fairly rate it as I haven't finished watching it, but so far I'm not impressed at all, though it also wasn't nearly as bad as expected.

I saw the reboot not too long ago and it wasn't nearly as bad as expected but also not good. Jokes fell flat and not once did I ever laugh, the ghosts and visual effects all looked cartoony and the stereotypes for both genders were insulting and embarrassing. Not to mention what a ridiculously underdeveloped villain Rowan is to the point he was barely a character. It's not without merit as I liked the characters of Gilbert and Holtzmann, and liked the new tools, but all in all a massive missed opportunity to revive the series. Had great potential but was severely bogged down by the poor writing, flat humor and terrible stereotypes.

5/10 is about a right rating and even that's being generous.

Seeing as the original and sequel both turn 35 and 30 respectively next year, I'm hard-pressed to believe nothing special is planned for the anniversary.
