Weird Universal Monsters lamp on eBay
« on: November 25, 2008, 05:39:13 PM »
So this was brought up over at the Classic Horror Film Board and I thought I'd see is you guys had any info

http://cgi.ebay.com/Universal-Studios-MONSTERS-Victorian-Dancing-Girls-Lamp_W0QQitemZ110317088199QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item110317088199&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205

Its marked w/ the Universal monsters logo and is in a Universal monsters box but I have never seen them license anything that was not overtly monsterous before, so this seems kinda unusual.

It's from a line of what were claimed to be prop reproductions, though I don't remember them making much that you'd recognize from your favorite monster movie (like this lamp), a candleholder...stuff like that. I believe that they produced the mirrored silver box that Lugosi smashed in DRACULA(which sounds cool), but it wasn't very accurate at all. That would be a sweet repro to have if it looked right, but as I remember it didn't. This lamp is a little too Truman Capote for me, too, no matter what movie it came from!

It's from that series of movie prop reproductions.  Can't remember which movie that lamp was in, maybe Dracula?

As a die hard Monsters fan, I can tell you with a certainty that I would never own such a girly little thing. ;D

Seriously though, you'd have a hard time sitting that next to a Monster mask without someone thinking "WTH(eck)? :D

Yeah, I have some of that stuff. I think I have a Mummy scroll box of some kind. Don't think it's scroll of Thoth though. There's an assortment of these Timeless Treasures. None of which are too timeless in my opinion.

The item from this coolection that I have is an ashtray from THE WOLF MAN?  Well, maybe inspired by the Wolf Man.  It was one of the cooler looking items from this collection.   Rob

The line also included several ceramics of iconic locations such as Frankenstien's Watchtower, Dracula's castle, and Torbert (Talbot) castle. I used to see these at the Studio Store when I worked at Universal Studios Florida.

What I could never understand (Still can't) is : If they were going to licence "props" for sale, why the hell not release an official Dracula ring or Wolfman cane?

is Universal ever going to figure out the potential profit in thier monsters?

That lamp is VERY bizarre. Talk about appealing to a narrow demographic! There are TONS of other items that would be desirable in a replicated form. In addition, way too many of the official Universal Monster items in the past few years have been a disappointment.

It's a nice lamp for a little girl's room.  But I just don't like Victorian things.

I'm thinking that this lamp appeared in more than one film. "Dracula" for sure, and also in another one. I'm pretty sure it's in "The Mummy". I think that IF it is an ACCURATE reproduction AND it does indeed appear in more than one classic, then that's gotta up its coolness factor quite a bit.
