Life Masks
« on: July 28, 2015, 06:34:54 PM »
The other day I photographed one of the life masks in my collection to show a friend, and that led to another life mask, and--for what it's worth, here are a few of my favorite life masks besides the usual Karloff/Price/Chaney/Lugosi ones which I think everyone is familiar with:
John Carradine

Peter Lorre

Basil Rathbone

Paul Wegener

James Cagney (for MAN WITH A THOUSAND FACES)

Buster Keaton

Of this heap, the Keaton is my favorite, too, Bob.  I'm also pretty keen on the Lorre.  All life masks have that "magic", just from being the identical image of a person's face at that moment in time--but some of them seem really to capture the personality, too...

Nice collection.

Personally, I collect life masks (and a few death masks) for my own enjoyment, not for heir value.
Because it is (realativly) easy to duplicate a life mask, there are tons of copies out there.

There are masks you will see constantly offered for sale and many of them are terrible 20th generation copies.

I would suggest looking at as many as you can and watching for fine details such as small wrinkles and pores in the skin, these are signs of an earlier generation copy.

Talking to dealers who don't really know what they have , like those who insist their Bela Lugosi life mask is his death mask, can be frustrating but it can also yield some fruitful finds.

The old episode of Cribs with Boy George shows in some small way the disinformation that floats around re life masks.

Keep collecting, have fun, and enjoy.

These are so cool- in a morbid way it's almost like viewing them at a wake in a funeral parlor, but to morbid me, that's cool!
Is there a Karloff, Price or Chaneys sr. or jr.?

My life-mask collection is a pretty ordinary one, I'm afraid.  I have perhaps a dozen more, but they're down cellar, and I'm not up to the climb today!  These are a few more I have in the upstairs rooms, though:

a younger Vincent Price:

an older Vincent Price:

Boris Karloff in earlier years:

a Lon Chaney Jr with Wolf Man appliance!  This came from Don Post Studios many years ago:

Mike, I remember these photos well now--I saw them first online, I think, while researching collections of curiosities.  Can't recall what page, what blog that might have been--but as soon as I saw the photos I remembered your excellent collection.  Wonderful, wonderful stuff!  Thanks for sharing the article again!

These I saw in the home of a television producer. Included in the group are Jerry Lewis & Buster Keaton, Marlon Brando & Grace Kelly,
W.C. Fields, Humphrey Bogart & Katharine Hepburn >

At the core of my own modest collection are four Universal horror greats >

and a few others >
