Do you like the Medveds?
« on: April 27, 2015, 09:15:35 AM »
I used to love reading the Medved brother's books when they first came out ("50 Worst Films..." "Golden Turkey..."). I know they were done for humor, but looking at them now, they kind of feel a little unfair and mean-spirited. I think we can agree the "Plan 9..." really isn't the "worst film of all time", though that branding has certainly attracted at lot of attention for that film and given Ed Wood some posthumous notoriety.

On the other hand, it's sort of taken the "good-natured" ribbing we give to some of the more marginal films we watch and turned it into kind of a "mob" mocking.

Funny books....but almost a guilty pleasure. Thoughts?

Supernatural, perhaps; baloney, perhaps not.

I love those books, even if I don't agree with all their assessments.  In particular, I disagree with them about an Animated film called "Alakazam the Great", one of the first fully animated feature films to come out of Japan.  I love the film as a child, and when I watch it now, I wish that the film could be dubbed to reflect the original storyline (altered somewhat by AIP), instead of the cheesy dubbing of the 1960's.  By the way, Plan Nine was voted by their readers as the worst film of all time, I think they would have liked "Robot Monster" to have that honor.  Michael Medved also later said they were a little harsh on  "The Omen", which he would later say on his Radio show, wasn't a bad motion picture.  I'm sure if they had known about "Manos Hands of Fate", that would have made the list.  I disagree with some of their assessments, yet when it comes to others like "Exorcist 2" (a follow up to the mega hit, by a director who said he didn't like the original), I couldn't agree more.

I agree totally that their reviews are largely mean-spirited.  They tend to exaggerate or overemphasize the flaws of many films too, I feel.  But back in the 70's, they kind of introduced the idea of sitting back and watching a bad movie on purpose as a new form of film appreciation.  Their books helped a lot of interesting, then-obscure films--like Plan Nine, and The Creeping Terror--become better known.  Perhaps MST3K might never have happened had not the Medveds weighed in with their scathing criticism.

Or in other words, I think their methods were a little crude, but the Medveds accomplished some very worthwhile things, and helped put a lot of weird little movies on the map.  Look how popular bad movies are today!
Beautiful moving, shifting colors!
