I realize that these aren't exactly novels or anything. But the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark trilogy was really important to me when I was little.
They really taught me about how the scariest things are the unknown. And of course, Stephen Gammell's art inspired and scared me a lot too. (Seriously, Stephen Gammell or go home, just don't even bother with the new prints of the books without him.) And sure, the books were only collections of already existing stories and poems but I think that helped me get curious about old urban legends and superstitions. Also, since they're for children, it intrigues me with how simply they were written. They manage to explain domestic abuse in such a simple way that a kid could understand basically all they need to know and leave the rest out.

I loved those books as a kid! Still have copies now.
Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfsbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.

I just ordered "Meddling Kids " as a Christmas present for my daughter. She is a huge Scooby Doo fan and I think she will enjoy an adult take on the characters. Thanks for mentioning it in this thread as I wasn't aware of the book.
My own list of great horror books include
Salem's Lot and the Shinning by Stephen King
Ghost Story by Peter Straub
Robert Howards short horror Stories
