While I have read the Classics of Horror, I feel like Dracula, Frankenstein, etc.. are a little too slow for my current taste (Blasphemy, I know- But hey, at least I have read them!  ;) . )

Some of the best horror books I have read in the past few years:

Salems Lot (This one is incredible)
Broken Monsters (This one really got to me after I finished it)
Heart Shaped Box
The North Water (Kind of historical fiction horror)
Currently reading "Meddling Kids"  which I am loving. About half way through - Kind of a bootleg Scooby Doo story (4 kids and a dog who solve mysteries) but now they are all grown up and their lives have turned upside down by something that happened on their last case.

Any of the original R.L Stine "Goosebumps".
Now, the scariest books I have read: "The Shining" and "Something Wicked This Way Comes" .

The Dresden Files is one of my favorites. It's a dark fantasy/detective series.
Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfsbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.

I realize that these aren't exactly novels or anything. But the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark trilogy was really important to me when I was little.
They really taught me about how the scariest things are the unknown. And of course, Stephen Gammell's art inspired and scared me a lot too. (Seriously, Stephen Gammell or go home, just don't even bother with the new prints of the books without him.) And sure, the books were only collections of already existing stories and poems but I think that helped me get curious about old urban legends and superstitions. Also, since they're for children, it intrigues me with how simply they were written. They manage to explain domestic abuse in such a simple way that a kid could understand basically all they need to know and leave the rest out.
