"You're gonna need a bigger boat"
« on: September 22, 2014, 05:27:39 PM »
Some of you that are old enough, like me, ;D might remember this item from childhood. I think I had this rubber shark as a child and have been looking for one in good condition for a while. This came out probably around when Jaws came out. I have heard 2 different stories about it. One, is that is in an official Jaws toy, the other is that it is not an official jaws toy. However, sources say that if not for Jaws, this toy would not have been made. Which I agree with. Anyway, it's probably around 40 years old. It is rare to find one. Even more rare finding one in good condition like this one. Especially since it was a beach/water toy.

My favorite thing about this item is the coloring. The second pic shows the color more accurately. It is a subtle blue gray. I had to be careful. Almost lost a thumb taking the last pic.;D

Yes, a really cool toy.

I don't understand.  There are only 2 pics posted. The second pic is the more accurate in color. A little more subtle blue gray.

When i was a kid the Wildwood NJ boardwalk was Jaws crazy!  I remember getting this guy along with lots of different rubber sharks.  My brother had Jaws sticker shark with the weird nub teeth.  I don't remember is the one posted had a squeaker, lots of them did, but I prefered the ones without because you could make them eat action figures, lol.

Here is a cool article about Wildwood's Jaws mania.

We don't really have a lot of vintage Jaws toys out there. Also, being a toy that was well played with in harsh conditions, most of the ones that are still around are in terrible shape.

Were there any 1975-6 official (c. Universal, logo on the box, etc.) JAWS toys/figs?

There could be. I have seen rubber sharks like this on the net, but of a different color. They were a solid gray and wrapped in plastic and I think sold as official jaws toys. I am not sure about mine though. I found out this little bit of info on a site a couple of months ago. Unfortunately I can't remember the site. I think someone posted the link on UMA once. I did find this really cool picture. ;D

Sometimes the "unofficial" toys are the best. We all know what can happen when Universal gets involved (the shark would have a green jacket).
