Do you have to be "in the mood' to watch a silent film?
« on: September 14, 2014, 12:32:46 PM »
Would you watch Nosferatu or Phantom of the Opera (Chaney) or any of the great silents more if they had been sound features? I think I would. I like silent flix, don't get me wrong. But I find I have to be "in a kick' to view them. Plus--I will often paint models or another project while "watching" something like Dracula or Frankenstein. Kind of hard to do that with a silent---since you cannot hear by way of dialogue when your favorite part is forthcoming.

You have to pay more attention when you watch a silent. Which I dont mind.....but I have to be in a specific mood.

When I watch a movie (even if I've seen it a doz. times) or TV drama, I try not to have any other distractions. When the TV is on when I'm on the computer, or whatever, it's usually the news channel, or comedy central, or something like that.

I guess it's like a foreign film, you have to be in a reading mood to watch them. Nosferatu is the one exception. The visuals are so cool & the music inviting (I'm talking the latest restored version), that it's a monster party every time.

My first silent film was The Lost World. Prior to watching, I assumed that it would feel like a novelty thing - though I knew I would feel a respect for it, and enjoy it. Well, within minutes it was like second nature to me to watch a silent film. It felt like I always had, and I just love them in general. I am quite aware that the world at large has no time for them though. I can't say I'm surprised, though I still think it's kind of a shame.

Not anymore.  My only problem now is finding the time to watch them, or watch anything at all for that matter.  But I've really developed a fondness for silent films over the last 2 or 3 years.  Though it is not a horror film, I feel I would be remiss if I didn't mention that my favorite is probably Die Nibelungen.

When it comes to the Golden Age of Hollywood horror, I am very much a Universal Monster, Legacy Collection films, mark. I do not like too many films outside of the Universal pantheon for films of that era. Some exceptions might include Freaks, Mark of the Vampire, Jekyll and Hyde (30s and 40s), Hunchback of Notre Dame (40s), and some of the gangster films of that era, such as Little Caesar and Scarface.

However, I do enjoy some of the silent films from time to time. Silent films of the 20s that I thoroughly enjoy:

Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Nosferatu
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
The Phantom of the Opera
The Lost World
Metropolis
Listen to them. Children of the Night. What music they make!
