Carl Dreadstone - Universal Horror Library
« on: August 22, 2019, 11:23:36 AM »
I need some assistance, but first a little background. I collect leatherbound books. Among them I have a decent section of monster/horror books. Not Stephen King type stuff but rather books classic monster movies were based on (or that were based on classic monster movies). I have Dracula, Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback, King Kong (the original 1932 novelization of the movie script) and then stuff like the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Lair of the White Worm and a bunch of others.

My son (8 years old and an avid reader) was perusing these books and he asked why I didn't have a Creature from the Black Lagoon book. I told him we did have the Crestwood House Creature book but he was not satisfied with that. He wanted a more thorough novel treatment. I told him the move wasn't based on a book, same with Wolfman, and the Mummy. I later recalled the King Kong novelization and wondered if there was something similar for any of the other classic movies. It was then that I discovered the Universal Horror Library by "Carl Dreadstone" i.e. multiple authors. As I looked into the Creature book from this series I discovered it has nothing whatsoever to do with the movie and so I passed. Instead I found a copy of the 1954 novelization of the Creature from the Black Lagoon by Vargo Stratten that is quite faithful to the movie and based on the original script.

Ultimately, I am going to have it professionally bound in green leather because ... I want to. I'd also like to do this will some other books while I'm at it but the book needs to be somewhat faithful the the story and a quality read.

Here is my question: Have any of you ever read any of the other Dreadstone monster books? Which of them are somewhat faithful to the source movie? Are there any other novelizations of classic monster movies that are better?

The others in the series are:

-The Bride of Frankenstein
-The Werewolf of London
-The Mummy
-Wolfman
-Draculas Daughter

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.
