I think distributors may have taken over by 1960 as the main culprit/force behind double-bills.  I think the studios gave all of that away as part of their collapse (of the 'studio system' which started heavily after WWII and by the 1950s, was well on its way to the end).

Some of these combos are soooo weird.  I can just see some distributor-clerk playing 52-card-pickup with the inventory rolodex, and deciding to follow the Corman School Of Marketing - "Anything with a good poster will sell - trust me."

Some of these films - they really should have handed out the poster WITH the tickets, though.  "What are we watching?"  I dunno.  "Who's in it?"  Don't know...not sure if they want us to remember their name, either.

The most astonishing double feature I ever attended was FREAKS with ERASERHEAD.  People practically ran from the theatre vowing never to have children!

These are double features that were probably never intended, but I swear I saw them  on real marquees:

Torso - 1073
Autopsy - 1975

The Black Hole - 1979
The Big Red One - 1980
