I was going down my cellar stairs when I hit a loose board and fell. to the bottom. I'm old and had my panic button around my neck but when I reached to hit it I could not move my arms. The light went out. I live alone..in the country.. and have no one that will miss me.

Yes.  That's why "grass, trees, sunshine - and other people" were new to him.  See, the idea is that he was kept in the cellar by his parents his whole life.
