Tom Baker has always been my favorite because that was the Doctor I was introduced with when I discovered the series on public television. I still remember watching an episode that had the Daleks and my dad walking into the room asking if my brother and I wanted to go see Star Wars.......needless to say we were in the car in the blink of an eye!

BBC News has released a list of canidates for the new Doctor.  Paterson Joseph (age 44) who played Rodrick in the episode "Bad Wolf", who would be the first black doctor if chosen, and is currently the most likely to be chosen.  Sean Pertwee (43) who is Jon Pertwee's son and played in the movie "Event Horizon" (pilot of the ship Lewis and Clark). David Morrissey (44).  Russell Tovey (27) who played the midshipman on the bridge on the Titanic in the "Voyage of the Damned" episode of Dr.Who.  James Nesbitt (43).  James McAvoy (29) who played in "Chronicles of Narnia".  Personnally I would prefer Pertwee or Joseph to get the part, Tovey and McAvoy look to young to be the Doctor (Doctor Who - The Toddler Years ?). But being a big Doctor fan, I'll probably accept whoever is chosen as the Doctor and go with it.

I seem to recall Brian Blessed as a candidate for the role at one time. Even now, he'd make an awesome senior Doctor.
Imagine him hooting and bellowing at Davros... !!!

I grew up watching the Tom Baker era episodes, and they'll always be my favourites. Every incarnation of the Doctor since then has been seriously underwhelming for me, especially the series low points when Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy were in the TARDIS.
I actually thought Paul McGann's interpretation of the Doctor showed real potential, and I was really looking forward to more episodes with him, but alas it was not to be.
The new Doctor Who seasons are an equal mixture of pretty good and utterly terrible. :-\

The first version of the Doctor I was exposed to was Peter Cushing (playing Wm.Hartnell's part) in the "Dalek Invation of Earth" movie.  Soon after they started playing the Tom Baker episodes on TV, followed with the earlier Doctors.  Tom baker appeared in several horror movies: "Tales from the Crypt", "Vault of Horror", "Golden Voyage of Sinbad".   Jon pertwee was in "House that Dripped Blood".  Christopher Eccleston played on TV's "Heroes" as an invisable guy.  I've seen every episode of all Doctors, except for the few destroyed  with Hartnell and Troughton. The only version I've had trouble liking was Collin Baker, just came off a little too goofy.

Tom Baker was also in The Mutations(1973) & Frankenstein: The True Story(1973), Jon Pertwee was also in One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing(1975), Patrick Troughton was in many Hammer films including The Gorgon(1964) and Phantom Of the Opera(1962). Christopher Eccleston was in The Others(2002) and 28 Days Later(2005)
If you look at some of the companions of the Doctor, they too had roles in horror/sci-fi stuff over the years: Carole Ann Ford(Susan) was in Day Of the Triffids(1963), Frazer Hines(Jamie) was in X-The Unknown(1956), Wendy Padbury(Zoe) was in Blood On Satan's Claw(1970), Roger Delgado(the original Master) was in First Man Into Space(1958), Terror Of the Tongs(1962), Stranglers Of Bombay(1961) and The Mummy's Shroud(1967), Ian Marter(Harry) was in The Abominable Dr.Phibes(1971), Louise Jameson(Leela) was in Disciple Of Death(1972), Lalla Ward(Romana II) was in Vampire Circus(1972), Anthony Ainley( the Master) was in Blood On Satan's Claw(1970) and The Land That Time Forgot(1975).

I'd like to see them bring back Tom Baker, they could pull it off with all the twists they manage these days. I know it will never happen, but what about Ron Perlman; he'd be darn perfect!

Season 4 of the new series comes out on DVD this Tuesday..and it started showing on Sat.nights as of last week on BBC America for those who are interested. This season had some great stuff in it, Kylie Minogue on the Titanic, the return of Donna Noble(as a regular), Martha's back working for UNIT, the Sontarans attack Earth, the Doctor's Daughter(!), and the grand finale at the end of the season featuring: return of Rose Tyler, Capt.Jack & Torchwood, Sarah Jane Smith & K9, Mickey Smith, Jackie Tyler and oh yeah, Davros & the Daleks..

Great stuff all.  I pre-ordered season four from Amazon three weeks ago.  I missed the Sontaran episodes, so I'm looking forward to those.  I loved the Sontarans back in the Pertwee-Baker era.  The Stolen Earth/Journeys End finale rocked, but then Dalek stories were always the ones I liked best anyways. I'd like to see a new Silurian (lizard people) story.

I'm one of those obsessive Who fans, and have been for ... well, since Colin Baker first showed on PBS here in the states.

Though I am a fan of all the various Doctors, Colin has always been my favorite.  I still hope for a multi-Doctor story bringing him into the current series, but at least I get new adventures with him from Big Finish.

I think the biggest drawback for his era is the companion Peri.  Useless doesn't begin to cover it. Ah, but that's just me. ;)

Peri might not have been one of the more bright companions, but I will cut her some slack in that she was cute and had some....assets to her credit.  Still didn't appeal to me much. Mel was the companion during the Colin years I didn't care for, she could be annoying at times.  Too perky, but she did have a cute smile.  I could have done without the carrot juice routine though.  As far as companions go, I've always liked Zoe and Jamie (the way they played off each other) and Sarah Jane Smith (one of the more intelligent one's) and Jo Grant (maybe the smartest of the bunch, plus the chemistry between her and the Doctor clicked nicely).  Jo is probably the companion I like best.  And yes, I loved the way Pertwee pronounced Silurians too.

I could never get into Mel's character. She was just such an annoying brat.  Other than the "fitness fanatic" side, there wasn't much difference in the two characters (looks aside).  And I haven't seen enough of the Mel/Seventh Doctor episodes to judge her there.

As for Peri's assets, well ... I'm the wrong market for that.  They created Adric and Captain Jack for me. ;)
