Gab,

You know, I belong to many boards but I think this is my favorite thread ... ever!

I've always wanted to build a Jacob's ladder for Halloween and after seeing yours I'm going to do it. Iread somewhere that they give off a gas, how long can you run one safely?

Thanks Phantom Dave.I can't wait to see this completed myself. ;D

  Thanks ActionJax
I did get a lot of parts from ebay such as the meters, knife switches, radio valves and the transformer for the Jacobs ladder. It will be a lot easier and cheaper for you if you live in the US.I've found some great stuff on US ebay but either the seller won't ship overseas >:( or the postage is way too expensive :(.There's not really much to a Jacobs Ladder,a transformer, power lead and switch connected to the transformer, high voltage cable leading to the 2 brass electrodes. That's pretty much it,the rest of the stuff on there is just to make it look cool. The transformer I have is a 15000v 30ma old neon sign transformer. The newer ones won't work.If you Google "Jacobs Ladder how to"you'll find a lot better information than I can give.If you know an electrician he can check it to make sure it's safe. It's a good idea to cover the electrodes with a clear acrylic tube. You can also try to get a transformer from neon sign shops.
Here's a link to an Abbott and Costello statue I did as a tribute to the guys.I have a tendency not to take photos of my work so I don't have a lot.

http://www.universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?topic=23570.0

Started the top of machine A today.Below is a jig I made to bend the 4mm acrylic rods.

This is what I got done.I still have to put something in the middle grey area.I'm toying around with the idea of putting some flashing lights there.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll get some sculpting done.I'll take a little break from the machines to work on the head and hands.I still have to make the neck bolts.

  Cheers

 Gab

Thanks for the information Doctor!  I've gone to eBay and found a few items I think will work.  I'm going to hit up the local hardware stores and such to see if I can find anything else that might work.

As for the Jacob's ladder, I can't really seem to find what I'm looking for...a true tutorial on how to build one.  Maybe I'm not using the proper search words or something.  So any additional help would be great!

And I'm really looking forward to see what you're going to do next!

 Hi Everyone,

Gab,

You know, I belong to many boards but I think this is my favorite thread ... ever!

I've always wanted to build a Jacob's ladder for Halloween and after seeing yours I'm going to do it. Iread somewhere that they give off a gas, how long can you run one safely?

 Thanks westbatman,
The Jacobs Ladder will produce ozone and nitrogen oxide which is not good to breath they should be in a well ventilated area.I only have these on for a minute or two. They can heat up a lot too.But they are a lot of fun. >:D

I am totally on the edge of my seat. Seriously.

Thanks Daniel I appreciate everyones comments ,it keeps me motivated.Feel free to post any ideas you might have.I'd love to hear them.

Here it is!!! ;D Sorry for the delay, work got in the way again. Also if you have anymore questions about the Jacobs Ladder let me know.I'll see if I can find some info on line and i'll post the links.

Cast my hands today using alginate.Once it was mixed with water I poured  it into a pvc pipe and put my hand in.I wouldn't recommend doing this without help.

Once it set (about 2min) I pulled my hand out.The pvc does have a split in it just in case I got stuck. There is a lot of suction when trying to remove your hand, normally the alginate is sliced with a blunt spatula.I melted some oil based clay then poured it into the alginate to give a thin layer, once cool 2 part rigid foam was poured in with a wooden dowel for a stand.

The clay hands removed from the moulds and ready to sculpt on.The pose isn't exactly what I wanted so may have to do another hand cast.I won't be working on these just yet so I'll decide latter.

Made a quick set of neck electrodes..If you look closely at the Frankenstein photo in the back you can see that the electrode is a little beaten and not pristine like most people make them.I'll mould them and then pour some polyurethane resin in to finish them off.I'll make both a battered set and pristine set to see what looks better on the sculpt.

I bought some wooden table legs off ebay. They only had metal ones at the hardware store.I'll make a small table to put the electrical and chemistry equipment you see in Bride of Frankenstein.Never made a proper table before only workbenches so this should be fun.

Also bought a new camera, well 2nd hand off ebay,so once I learn how to use it I'll post a video of the Jacobs Ladder.Assuming i can figure out how to post a video. ;D

Thanks again everyone for your comments. Will post more pics soon.

OMG!  That looks so good.  And you are so accurate with the design.  I just re-watched the original 1931 film and paused at the creation scene, and I have to say that yours looks "dead-on!"  Great job.

As for my quest to build my Jacobs Ladder, could you get me a picture of the neon transformer you use?  Thanks :)

  Thanks AJ
The machine I made is a little thinner (400mm wide) than the one in the film (about 600mm wide).I'm just trying to get a feel for the film not an exact copy.It would take me years to copy it exactly and cost a fortune.

This is the type of transformer I used,an old neon sign transformer. This one was made here in Australia so it runs on 240v input whereas the US it would be 110v.If you look at the first page of this thread you can see the one I actually used on this Jacobs Ladder,it is very similar. The type pictured here was used in my small Jacobs Ladder you see one the first page ,this one is a spare I have for another future project.

Another vid of the Jacobs Ladder.Turn up the volume it's really cool.

Thank you very much.  That was exactly what to see.

I never meant to imply that you were trying to build an "exact" copy.  But you are doing an incredible job of creating something that would have easily been seen on the set. :)  I've said it before and I'll say it again, you are a real artist my friend.  And an inspiration to me.  I'm wanting to build something (as good as I can) for my yard display this Halloween.  So I really appreciate all the advice and recommendations I can get. :)

I look forward to see your project completed.

Oh and how's the sculpt coming?

No problem. If you want more pics let me know.

As for the sculpture it's going slow,I actually haven't touched it yet.Want to finish the neck electrodes and then I'll do a bit more.

I'm thinking of repainting the walls, I think your right they would look better grey. They are a little overpowering at the moment.

Ooo the grey I think would look really good.  Not to say that I don't like what you've got now.  But the grey walls would lend itself to the idea of a B&W film.

I'm still surprised that you're going to start your sculpt over again.  I thought you were really capturing the creature quite well.  Are you planning on trying to do Boris even more accurately?  Or more of a generic monster?

And if your not going to be using that first sculpt...I'd love to have it! :)  I'll be sending you may address here in the States.  You can just send it along with anything else you might be getting rid of.  ;)

I think grey was a good call it would be less distracting and move the focal point away from the walls and to the Frankenstein monster after all that should be the main interest of the diorama.Plus I can paint the door a wood tone and it won't blend in with the walls.

I'm going to finish the sculpt I've started and  going to  start another with a different facial expression once I get more clay.I want these as accurate as I can to the Karloff 31 Frankenstein. In the future I may sculpt Karloff from Bride and alternate figures in the diorama this will depend on how this current Frankenstein goes.

When this project is finished I was thinking of having a competition,if it's OK with the Terry, and giving away a set of Frankenstein parts so that someone here could make their own figure. We'll see it all depends on how the final figure looks I guess and if there is any interest.

Thanks again for the comments and interest in this project.

Now after you're done with this one you're going to do make other iconic classic monster diaroma, right?

Dracula?
The Wolf Man?
The Mummy?
The Creature From the Black Lagoon?
Phantom of the Opera? (silent version please)

and then these will all be displayed in the Australian Classic Universal Monster's Museum. :)

Now that would be a trip worth taking to see this kind of work.
