Could Borat be coming to Grimsby?
« on: October 10, 2013, 02:04:01 PM »
Is anyone familiar with Sacha Baron Cohen, the actor/comedian of Borat Fame? Well, he's been hanging around my lovely hometown of Grimsby, apparently 'researching' for a planned film on Northern England! Now, I've mentioned a couple of times that Grimsby is a town trapped in the 80s, and is full of 'characters' and rogues (I call them Zuggs!). Grimsby has often been used as a film location, most recently for This Is England and Atonement. Well now it seems Mr. Cohen might be sending up this sunny part of the world! All week he has been spotted in several pubs in one of the rougher parts of town (with several bodyguards) and even went to see Grimsby Town Football Club play. I can't wait to hear what he thinks of my hometown!

Here he is, mixing with the locals....

He made a great Pirelli in "Sweeney Todd," but I'm not much of a fan of his humor.

Hey Ben - I thought THIS IS ENGLAND was damn good flick!  I'll have to watch it again sometime.

Yep he was surprisingly good in Sweeney Todd count Z, and is humour isn't for everyone. I much preferred him during his early years with the Ali G Show before he went mainstream.

UP - have you seen Dead Man's Shoes? My personal favourite Shane Meadows film and his most well observed IMO. I met Shane Meadows once, in a pub in Nottingham (his hometown). I say met, I actually just stuttered something and shook his hand. Leanne and I went to have a 4D scan of Matilda in the womb and afterwards went shopping. I suggested having a bite to eat in a random pub and there he is propping up the bar! He was with a group of friends including several regular actors from his films. I never thought I'd be the type to be star-struck but I was giggling like a school girl!

Ooooh! I love ALL of his work & have been captivated by him since Ali G.!  He is such a chameleon and I can't wait to see what he's up to next! I watch a lot of his movie scenes with my hand over my mouth- hahahahaha! Or through my fingers over my eyes- like Nicholas Cage & Joaquin Phoenix in that 8MM movie when they're watching death porn! But I keep coming back- movie after movie and I laugh my head off   :)   He was supposed to play Freddie Mercury, but there were disagreements (?) about how her wanted to play the role (that's what I read on the internet, anyway).
Ben- I know you'll keep us updated! I can hardly wait to hear what's going down in Grimsby!!!

Update Charpie! Apparently the 'northern charms' of my hometown made an impression on Sacha Baron Cohen. His next movie will be a spoof on the spy genre, with Cohen playing a spy who goes on the run with his football hooligan brother. The title of the film is 'GRIMSBY!'

AGGHHHH! Yay!!! First off: I'm glad there will be another brilliant movie from Mr. Cohen! You never know when these geniuses are going to suddenly retire or take up a whole new art form! This sounds really coooool! My family & I were sitting around last weekend discussing which of his movies we like the best. Borat was so darn charming- but I adore The Dictator!
Oh man! I am so excited for Grimsby!   :)    Thanks so much for the update!  You are an official "Insider" in my book!     :)

Hey....maybe I could start a tour bus! I could offer a first hand experience of the locales. It'd be kind of like a safari, of course I would have to provide vaccinations and stab-proof vests, but these are minor details!  ;D

Well.. I shared all the rumors with my other family members! This is so cool. We are all big fans and the spy genre sounds perfect! We will all be watching your town pretty soon! You will be our go-to person for extra commentary, when the movie comes out  :)
