Ferry must have had different producers of these and had different product runs, as my Ferrybinder has no pocket, and the artwork is sealed into the binder, just like the 60s ones.

My set of Ferry binders are also seamless. And Ferry is senseless. So there you have it.

Well, maybe I have a bootleg Ferry binder!  Talk about lower than low.  A bootleg of a bootleg.  More likely, I suspect at some point he found it cheaper to switch to the pocket style instead of the sealed ones.

Huh.  I never knew that those binders were just art inserts in the front cover.

Heck if someone was to scan the art inserts, they could be printed and inserted into new binders...
Presto!  Instant 60's binder!

Is that what Ferry did when he was reselling them in the pages of the new FM?
(I was so very tempted too.)

I think~ That's what was done on some so-called repro Hasbro binders sold by a guy a few years ago. Images were scanned from the actual notebooks, printed, and slipped into new clearview binders. I believe he said, in his eBay ad, that it would be difficult to tell a new one from an original binder. Not true, as the clear vinyl wasn't sealed at the top, the image was blurry and printed on a single thin sheet of paper and the binder size was off.. Also, on an original, the image is laminated to a 1/8 inch piece of cardboard (rounded at the top and bottom right side corners and squared at the top and bottom left side corners). If I was going to make repro binders, I'd scan the image off of the paint-by-number sets for a nice clear print and glue it to a thicker backing cardboard and have the final image sealed into the binder. But that's just me. Wouldn't be much point to this though..the more fun would be to make a Creature from the Black Lagoon binder to go with the 1st three (or some other monster).

Here is what the insert looks like (thickness) as removed from my sad-shape original binder ...and a pic of my display binder (which is a mint unused example).
Best,
Richard

The repro binder idea doesn't interest me as much as just having some nice prints/scans of the paint-by art.

Your right Mike. That artwork is priceless. Nice quality poster prints would sell brisk I think. I'm surprised that this hasn't been done yet.

Were only three different binders made? Who did the artwork? Were these binders only sold through Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine originally or were they sold through stores as well?

???

First, I would love to know the artist, but like so much of this stuff from back then, the artist's name is lost to history.

I used to think there was a Creature binder, because there was an ad for them on the bottom of some of the Phoenix Candy boxes that used a Creature drawing on the drawing of a binder. Didn't say what monster you'd get if you sent for one. Wish there had been a Creature binder!  :)

I still hold out hope that one day the paintings will surface and we'll find out who created them, AND that there's a Creature binder.

Here's a cool Captain Company ad from Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine for these binders:
