After seeing Frankenstein tower over all the tourists, it is interesting to see him with Andre the Giant in 1974:

Now, who's scary?

Andre the Giant did a big publicity tour in 1974, visiting Universal, Disneyland, etc.

Here are a couple more pictures taken with the Walk-Around Phantom of the Opera at Universal Studios in '74:

This image appeared in a 1976 issue of Inside Wrestling Magazine.

That last photo is not a great pose but it shows a clear close-up of the Phantom mask worn by their walk-around in '74.  I think he looks less like the classic Lon Chaney version and more like Mortimer Snerd's grandfather.  (Don't know why he is dressed like Charley McCarthy.)

(All of these Andre the Giant poses can be clicked on for a bigger image.)

Is that a DP mask?

It's a tux! Phantom wore a tux.

( I already posted these in Latest Gets, but I found this thread while Googling the Walk Around Monsters )

This is me at Universal Orlando in the early '90s, getting my head crushed by Frankenstein.

I had not! Thank you Adam for taking the time and energy to to the research and interview the man behind the mask.  That was a very entertaining read!

Thank you.

Mike couldn't have been any nicer.

Universal also experimented with creating a kid-friendly (which usually translates as an over-protective parent-friendly) Baby Frankenstein.

He didn't last - and is not all that well remembered today.

While I love the walk around Frankie and Phantom, I think it is sad they never (consistently) had the Creature in a lake or something (let's pretend that musical didn't happen) . I would have loved to walk over a footbridge and have the Creature try to grab me as a kid. Heck, I'd like that now!
