Not even big enough to eat my cereal in. I would have only paid 1million. It would be a good cat food dish.

I'm just bowled over! I really can't imagine someone going to a garage sale and finding this for sale at $3. "Oh that bowl there...How much do ya want for it? Three dollars! Mmmm...Would ya take $2.50? No I would make a loss of millions of dollars give me three and it's yours."

See, I wouldn't have even bought the thing for $3, because I think it's ugly.

....and that's why I'll never make it big. ;D

How does something like that even survive for a thousand years? When I was around 13, my mother bought a complete set of stoneware dinner service for eight. We've got two dinner plates, three salad bowls, four soup bowls, a sugar bowl, and the salt and pepper shakers left, after 37 years. So, about 3/4 of all that stuff is broken and in landfills from NJ to NC. Heck, when my mother dies, whatever I keep of that stuff, about half of it will get broken before I die, most likely! Then, it'll probably all get trashed. So, you really have to wonder, how did this bowl last a thousand years, and get from China to New York?

It sounds like an urban myth! I don't know why but I don't believe the 'whole' story.

A big chunk of the story is missing.

1: Bowl bought at garage sale
2: ?
3: Bowl sells for millions at auction

The missing part, step 2, is what made the person who bought the bowl suddenly say, "Hmmmm, I really should have this appraised because, despite the fact that I paid less for it than a Happy Meal, I feel it may be a priceless treasure". That, the missing part, is the real meat of the story.

Frankly, if I had bought that bowl at a garage sale I would be eating M&Ms out of it right now, unaware of its true value.

My thoughts too! As they say though, one man's junk is another man's treasure.

That's correct. The other missing angle is the reaction of the yard sale seller. "Nonsense" he might be saying. "I was with my mother when she bought the ugly thing at Woolworth."
