Unproduced MAXX-FX monsters ad
« on: October 03, 2008, 12:33:04 PM »
Here's an ad from a 1989 Toy Shop taking pre-orders for the Maxx-Fx figures that never came to be.  Too bad, they look like they might have been pretty cool.

I have the Freddy version of this toy.
When I was 5 or 6 years old, I really wanted the Freddy one for Christmas.  My mom bought it for me and she kept it in her car to hide it from me.  One night, a few days before Christmas, someone shot a bullet through the car window and stole my Freddy doll.  Can you imagine someone stealing a 5 year old's Christmas present?  Finally, about 15 years later, I came across it again on ebay and bought it.  I'm very happy to finally have it.
I wish they made the other ones.  Frankenstein looks very cool!

Yeah, i found them in a Caldor back in the day. They were brand new and already in the discount aisle for like 5 bucks a pop! They pictured the unreleased versions of Franky and Alien, etc  on the back of the box. I immediately wrote to Matchbox to see if there was any way to purchase them and was told the Maxx FX line was discontinued...BUMMER!

There are some really stunning color images of the unproduced figures at PlaidStallions but I don’t want to hot-link them without Brian’s permission. Here’s the URL:

Here is the creator of the figures and you get a better look at the figures as well.

Wow, what a concept! It's Captain Action, but with monsters, what's not to love. It's a shame that Matchbox couldn't make a go of this product, with the proper marketing it could have really taken off. The whole thing is really well thought out and presented. Perhaps it's time for some other company to take up the torch and re-introduce the concept of a changeable character for boys. The Monster High dolls have been a big success and it seems like a toy like this geared toward boys would work well. Forget the licensed characters and give them generic monsters to play with. The idea of a movie make-up/efx artist who fought bad guys did fairly well as two movies years ago, these toys could work with a good marketing campaign behind them.
You knew the job was dangerous when you took it, Fred.

Are you talking about FX and FX2?

I remember reading about Maxx in Model and Toy Collector magazine. They followed the progress of the line in development, and then ran the article where they announced the line was dead.

Flash forward a few months or so, and a friend of mine brings a Freddy Kruger head and hat to school. I couldn't believe he somehow got a Maxx FX Freddy! I had to know where he got it! He told me Big Lots, and I begged my Mom to take me there after school. Sure enough, there was Freddy, and I bought him, but I was hoping to find the others too. Little did I know Freddy was the only one released.

The backlash from the release of Freddy ruined everything. Parents were livid, and it killed the line. There is a detailed story about the rise and fall of Maxx FX somewhere on the net. I'll see if I can find the link.
