While we were all looking out for Asteroid Toutatis, this one sneaked in unannounced:

I heard it on the news this morning.

One heck of an event and a great coincidence with the asteroid fly by.

Here are some additional photos of the damage.
Most seems to have been broken glass and structure collapse caused by the shock wave.
There has been a small impact site only a few meters across--just a hole punched in the ice.

That flaming crater image is, at first look impressive. However, I strongly suspect it is NOT from this meteorite.   The crater edges should show signs of matter being blown out.  This shows undercutting.  I strongly suspect it is more terrestrial in origin.

UPDATE:   That crater footage is actually the Door To Hell in Turkmenistan. The "crater" is a natural gas fire which has been burning continuously since 1971.

Yeah.  I was taken in by that little hoax.

It was very early in the morning and I was preparing to go to bed after being up all night.   Duh.

People are telling stories about being next to windows when the shockwave blew them out and being thrown to the opposite side of the room.

There were plenty of tall buildings it passed over, good thing it didn't hit one - or impact at the corner of 1st & Main.

These things always seem to crash in or near Siberia.

The Science Channel is promoting a special broadcast about the Russian Meteor.  It will air tonight at 8:00 PM EST.

Look it up in your area.

UPDATE:

It's on NOW.

UPUPDATE:

If you didn't see it, you missed nothing.  Five minutes of repeated Russian dash cam footage, hosted by to happy faces of the same quality that hosts films for "Movie and a Makeover", etc.  Then 55 minutes of general fill.

I had hoped that the Science Channel would put something a little better together.

Yecch!

The PBS network science program NOVA has a new show out about this meteor:

NOVA – "Russian Meteor Strike"

Today 3/27, 9:00pm – 10:00pm (60 minutes)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scientists hunt for debris from the 7,000-ton asteroid that crashed in Russia, searching for clues to its origin and makeup; a review of past explosions, from Tunguska to the asteroid that extinguished the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

That's just 20 minutes from now.  Would have posted this earlier, but I just saw it listed.

Hope NOVA does a better job than the stupid thing that came out in the same week it ocurred.

Check your local listings for repeats.

UPDATE:

That was much better than the  crumby Science Channel show.

Interesting to note that that scientists have calculated that the meteor entered at a very shallow 20 degrees and the debris field is estimated to cover an 800 square mile area.
