Monster Movie Matinee/Chiller Theatre Clips Anyone?
« on: December 09, 2007, 08:29:27 AM »
I'm looking for any video tape footage of the intros that aired on Monster Movie Matinee on WSYR/WSTM (Syracuse NY) back in the 70s...

The show always started out with a far away shot of a model of a haunted house on a hill. Once inside there was a mad doctor/hunchback type in a lab coat with an eye patch and scars on his face. He would converse with a gentleman off screen...all you would see would be his long-fingered hand, with ring, which he would gesture with as he spoke...

And then the movie would begin.

I haven't seen this in years and would love too again...same with the six-fingered hand opening for Chiller Theatre. Yeah I know I can find it on You Tube but I wanted a decent VHS or DVD copy instead of some small grainy/pixelated thing.

Where ya from, bud?

Hailing from Watertown, NY here, and MMM used to be a staple in my house for years....did you know that the actor who played epow died maybe 3-4 years ago?  I have a link somewhere if you want me to dig it out.

Jeff,
I live in Rome NY but one of our local NBC stations is the one from Syracuse. I found a link also to Monster Movie Matinee but there was only audio, no video. The guy that played Epal also played Salty Sam on the Saturday morning cartoon show the channel had.

Tom,
I've seen that one on You Tube but I never remember that version when I was a kid. It might have been a little before my time. My mom had a thing for Creature Features (on the old WNEW channel) and Chiller Theatre (WPIX) and I have a distinct memory of hiding behind the couch at a young age, afraid of that creepy six-fingered hand!

This link is for monster movie hosts, with a brief discussion on MMM...here is the link:  http://myweb.wvnet.edu/e-gor/tvhorrorhosts/hostsd.html#DrENickWittyandEpal

Must be close to the psych center down there, huh?  I've been trying to get hired on as staff there, but have too much education...LOL.

Here is what aired back in the 70s in the Mpls market. We had something called "Horror Incorporated". It made a big impression on me back then (I was just around 8 yrs old).

Just saw it again tonight for the first time in over 30 years courtesy of YouTube! Unfortunately, it hasn't held up as well as the memories have. Seems tame if not a bit generic. But to an impressionable eight yr old mind in the 70s, it was friggin cool!

I'm digging that, Terry!  I can totally see how that might have creeped you out as an eight year old but as a 47 year old, I appreciate it as well.   Very cool!  If I can only dig up my "Creature Features" intro featuring Marty McNeely doing the prose to "Experiment in Terror" playing with all the old Universal Monster Movie clips playing.....Chicagoland version of monster movies from the early 70s.  Monster Bob?   You must have some great input on this!

Boy would I like to see the openings of Creature Feature and Chiller Theater from the 70s St. Louis market.  I'd especially like to see Creature Feature.  It was a slow tilt up a still image of a gargoyle-like creature.  Later, they changed it to kaleidoscope-style abstract opening.  Of course, it's the original I want to see.  Chiller Theater was a rotating zoom out from a sinister cloud formation, set to Jerry Goldsmith's music from The Invaders Twilight Zone episode.
