I'm very curious to know what people think of both of these huge pieces that are coming out.  I'm considering maybe getting one or the other.
To me, both have qualities that I really like them.  The biggest thing that turns me off to Amok's piece is that it is about 100.00 more than the figure that Mezco is putting out..and it's only 4 inches bigger.
And is it just me or does Amok time REALLY overcharge for some of their things?  I was looking at UM stuff on their site and was really blown away by how much they want to charge for some things.

I've passed on all the AMOK items. I'll pick up the mezco stuff though in a heartbeat.

mezco figure looks cool and fresh, amok time looks weird like he is stoned, i think universal not should aproved this prototype more changes should apply to this figure... just saying...

That's due to them going for a more Karloffian representatio of the monster, Boris's eyes were barely open!  I like them both but for different reasons.

Sadly, Amok's will not be produced as they no longer have the Universal license.

While sad, as I'm sure they do love the material, I have to say that the Mezco is a much better piece. I usually prefer less stylization, but it overall just looks to be higher quality. Not quite as big, but at $100 less, it seems to be the better buy.

I didn't think so! It seemed odd that two such similar products would come out from different licensees.

The Mezko version looks like some Rat Rod custom outsider lifestyle version.       Or more like Dick Breifer took a dump on top of a Frankenstein toy.

Amoks would have been hands down better.  If not for anything but the likeness.     One of the few Amok items i wanted, till the fargin bastiges cancelled it.

I know Paul at Amok Time pretty well and he's made some bold and creative moves on the monster toys front.  Some great B-Movie characters and frankly, he took a big expensive chance taking on the Universal License.  He started his company basically out of a basement of his house (if I remember right) and turned into a very nice store.  The main reason his products were/are more expensive than Mezco is simply volume.  His production runs are no where near what Mezco obtains and as such his costs are substantially higher.  As to his Frankenstein vs the Mezco one, I really like them both for their own charm and campiness.  I would get both if Amok Time was still able to produce theirs.   I support any company pumping out our beloved classic monster toys and am very excited Mezco is doing what their doing (including the Living Dead dolls).

My reasons? Price vs desirability.

I like both. if both were the same lower price as the Mezco one, I'd have to mull over which I prefer, but odds are I'd go with the mezco one because I really like the style, and I've been hearing about the amok one now for what seems like decades.

IMHO, if mezco can produce enough to sell at that price, there's no really good reason why Amok can't. Obviously Mezco believes the market it there, and it something that can easily also be sold around halloween annually.

Plus I'm still ticked about what happened with the creech price.

I have many interests of items I collect, and for something to make it through to my want list, the price has to match my passion for it.

(For instance, I love what Hot Toys is doing with 1:6 scale figures, but theres no way in hell I think they are worth $300 a piece.)

The adult genre market is being milked with perople raising prices because hey believe the market can bear it.. however sales numbers are dropping to the point where its no longer feasable to produce them now.

Matty collector almost cancelled both the master of the universe line, and the DC lines, because they couldn;t get enugh subscriptions to justify producing them... BUT we are talking one of the largest toy manufacturers in the world, and they are charging $25 plus shipping for the same sized figure that ou can buy in a store for $10. (And the deluxe figures can be 3 times as much!)

I really believe between the bad economy, and the milking fo the adult collector market, that we are seeing it collapse now, just like the collectable card and comic book markets crashed years ago.

We complain because of the lack of UM product, but look in the toy aisles.. walmart used to have two full 40 foot sides of action figures... now its down to 4 or 5 main lines, and only half an aisle!

aura of foreboding

I prefer the Amok Time version and will not be getting the Mezco.  I may bite with the stylized version of the Creature, but the rest just don't really appeal to me.  I will, however, buy all of the Living Dead Doll Monsters.
