"Lost in Space" appreciation thread!
« on: July 26, 2012, 04:27:52 PM »
Western Publishing (Gold Key) launched a comic entitled "Space Family Robinson" in the fall of 1962 with the first issue being cover dated December.

The "Lost in Space" CBS TV series starring the Space Family Robinson was created and produced by Irwin Allen and filmed by 20th Century Fox. The first episode aired on 15 September 1965. The "Lost in Space" TV series had very obviously "borrowed" heavily from the comic.

This created a dilemma for Western Publishing. The company didn't really want to sue irwin Allen or CBS for copyright violations since the company was licensing a number of other Allen and CBS TV shows for various Gold Key titles. An amicable settlement was reached whereby Western Publishing received an unspecified cash payment and was allowed to add "Lost in Space" to the title of the "Space Family Robinson" comic book beginning with issue #15 cover dated January 1966 thus benefitting from any spillover of popularity from the TV show. Here's a scan of issue #30:

The comic was not, however, based on the TV show. Unlike the TV series, the comic never degenerated into campiness as did the TV show in its last two seasons. The comic ran until issue #36 cover dated October 1969. It was revived in October 1973 and another thirteen issues were published until it was curtailed again with the December 1977 issue.

The TV show ran for three seasons, the last two in colour. A total of 83 episodes were aired. Despite being slotted opposite "Batman" on ABC, the "Lost in Space" TV show drew noticeably better ratings than did "Star Trek" during their initial runs.

Here's my view-Master set. I always liked watching the show and I have some of the comics, too.

In the back left you can see my AHI Lost In Space Robot. I have more LIS robots, I'll look for pics to post.

a little OT, maybe, but I thought this was kinda cool...

Last summer I was doing LIS week for a 'Vintage Toy Of the Day' thing I was doing on another board
& it turns out that-

the Lost In Space Ray Gun was modified from a Remco - Hamilton Invaders - 1964 - Grenade Pistol

& the larger Lost In Space 'Chariot' Rifle,

was either modified from, or based on the Remco - Monkey Division Okinawa Gun - 1965

neat, huh?

Cool! And that's a great example of the Hamilton's Invaders grenade pistol as well. The cardboard is nice and white.

Seems that modifying of current toy guns was a frequent thing in the early 60's. I have a 007 record album where they used a Defender Dan machine gun as a spy weapon on the cover.    Buddy

I have a whopping total of one card from the Lost in Space set that Topps issued in 1966:

I have all four of the wrapper variations, however. Here's a scan of two:

I LOVE the Lost in Space Cyclops monster.
I still really want to get a model kit, maybe it'll be the first model kit I ever paint. :P

I'm much more for aliens than regular cast members usually.
I only have the Trendmasters Cyclops figure (best figure EVER), and the super cool 12" Keeper figure by Sci-Fi Metropolis.  I was really really bummed they cancelled the android Verda figure, she would have been really cool.  The carrot guy would be neat to own someday too, which they'd make more aliens! MOAR!

Look for a kit that may have been started if you plan to build it. A M.I.B. unstarted Aurora Lost in Space kit is egregiously expensive. One that's started would fetch no more than 25%-35% the price of a M.I.B. kit.

I have most of the Space Family Robinson LIS from Gold Key, and all the LIS comics from Innovation.  Bill Mumy (Will Robinson) wrote all but a couple of issues.

B9 robot released in 1997

90 card LIS set released around the late 90's.  Covered every episode, seasons 2 and 3 in full color.  Not sure who released it or exact year, writting to small.

Thank you! That is an excellent suggestion, I will take it. I have no problem taking over a started kit! Thanks.
