"Happy Birthday Ray Bradbury!"
« on: August 22, 2008, 08:41:38 AM »

Today is Ray Bradbury's 88th birthday and if you'd like to send him best wishes you can e-mail Ray at:   raybradbury1920(*at*)gmail.com

Ray doesn't do e-mail himself but his daughter Alexandra will forward all messages to him.
If you miss sending a message today, fret not, for you can catch Ray on October 31st--the date he wishes his birthday was on.

So raise a glass of Dandelion Wine in a virtual toast to Ray Bradbury.

Of course I have to comment on this.

MY great doorway to fantasy was unlocked by this man.
I have long since swallowed that key.

He lives in the October country and when he was faced with death, he retreated to the carnival and a meeting with Mr. Electrico.  Electricity dancing from a sword tip, he was knighted by the man in the electric chair, who said to him, “LIVE FOREVER!” and he set out to do just that.

He found his heartbeat at a young age and remained a strange child of space, owing to his meetings with Lon’s children, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Erik.  Books by Burroughs cast his eyes eternally skyward towards the bright, shiny red planet.  He stood; arms outstretched begging for John Carter to take him home.

Thinking quickly, his home world provided him with grand gifts, in an effort to keep him on the planet.   The greatest of which was Marguerite McClure, who first met this strange trench coat-clad youth in a bookstore and became his devoted life-love, Maggie Bradbury.  At their wedding, the best man was his childhood best friend Ray Harryhausen, who brought sword-fighting skeletons, Cyclops, and dragons to life.  It seemed only fitting.

More gifts and blessings came in their four beautiful daughters, Susan, Ramona, Bittina and Alexandra who also carry his pumpkin flame in their eyes, souls and faces, and passed that on to his eight grandchildren.

His home is filled with Peter Pan laughter, wine, books and cats.

Each year my Jack O Lantern burns in his honor.  The wind that whips the trees in the weeks before year’s end has a chilling, thrilling sting thanks to him.

LIVE FOREVER RAY BRADBURY...that was the command from Mr. Electrico.
And I know Maggie ( who has left before him…vanishing like a long summer, leaving wispy memories like the smoke from her cigarettes and the long legs of a glass of wine.) would agree.

Greedy?  Yes.  But unashamed, I love that he's here.  That he has remained among the mortals for another year.
One More for The Road, Mr. Bradbury....

Please?

Happiest of Birthdays.

I created a little display in honor of Ray Bradbury's birthday at work; in the forward to his selection of short stories he stated that his greatest wish was to walk into a library and see his own works shoulder to shoulder with those of the authors that inspired him.
So I cleared the shelf of all the Bradbury the library owned, drug in some of my own books from home to help fill in the gaps of authors(some drunk stole our "Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe"), Ray's photo portrait that hangs in the hallway in my house next to two lobbycards from "Moby Dick", my personalized bottle of Dandelion Wine, the autographed poster from "Something Wicked This Way Comes" along with the envelope it came in that's decorated with one of Ray's little monsters, etc. The birthday balloon is left over from last week when a patron thought he was being funny by giving me a card & balloon in honor of T.E.Lawrence's birthday on the 16th of August.
Amusing isn't it, these books are displayed under the library's fire alarm system.
There's two more photos to come that are close-ups of the ends of the display.

All three of these photos were e-mailed to Ray this morning and the birthday boy has already replied in kind.

Here's the left side of the display with Mr. Poe in attendance.

"Fahrenheit 451" is the first book next to the monkey bookend and the closest book to the fire alarm.

And here's the man himself with the bottle of Dandelion Wine from Greentown, my fragile poster and a limited printing of a poem Ray Bradbury wrote entitled "That Son of Richard III"
which is about Melville being insipred to write "Moby Dick" after finding Shakespeare in a edition with large enough print he could read. August 22nd is also the date of The Battle of Bosworth Field where Richard III lost his life and made way for the Tudors.

Great Display MEEK!

I'd LOVE to walk into my library and see something like this.

Enviable collection of Bradbury.
Long may he SURVIVE! (not necessarily live)

    Dearest Professor:

Thanks for the kind words about my display but did you foward your birthday missive to Ray?
I'm sure he would love to read it. Ray Bradbury has always said that the public library was his university and I agree with him there since I believe that if you can read, you can do anything.
I left the display up for today and I can see Ray smiling at me across from the circulation desk---tonight everything goes back to where it belongs and Ray goes back in my hallway next to Captain Ahab.

Beautiful tribute, Meek, to a man who has written beautiful--and frightening--and inspiring--and heartwarming stories.  He keeps his and all our combined childhoods safely in his heart.  Happy Birthday, Ray, though by now a belated one!
