Abbott & Costell Meet The Creature From The Black Lagoon
« on: June 20, 2012, 08:37:22 AM »

Wouldn’t it be a neat idea if Universal made Abbott & Costello Meet The Creature From The Black Lagoon as a CGI film? They have proven they can do snappy animated films with examples like Despicable Me and it would be a great way to have them finally tangle with the final movie monster and get people familiar with them again. The premise could be as simple as having them be sailors on the expedition boat. They could be trapped on a ship with the Creature (did they ever do a film at sea?) I was just curious what people might think of the idea.

Why? If you had it well done by people like PIxar who care it could be a great thing.

Many of us here have an inherent distrust of CGI.

As do I but if you have a talented studio doing an animated feature through CGI I'm a bit more open to it. On a project like this it's the only way it could happen. A few years ago a Laurel & Hardy film was made with live actors where they meet the Mummy (never saw it) but when you do that then it's their grandchildren or whatever. I haven't seen the new 3 Stooges movie but I wouldn't have high hopes given the team behind it.

First of all, that animated short was a test-reel to get a full-length feature made. Universal passed, wisely, I believe. Secondly, that Colgate sketch shows why an "A&CMTCFTBL" feature was never made. By that point, all they did was recycle old gags.

If it were to happen, I think it'd have to be a fan film, like "House of the Wolf Man." Either that, or, yes, live-action like "The Three Stooges." Made for just $30 million, it grossed $43 million domestically. Even critics who didn't like the movie praised the spot-on performances of Chris Diamontopolus, Sean Hayes, and Will Sasso. Get a pair of actors who can reasonably mimic Abbott and Costello, get their estates and Universal to come to terms, and then go for it. It doesn't even need a set-up. Hell, set it BETWEEN "Revenge of the Creature" and "The Creature Walks Among Us." But, all CG-animated? I'll burn down the theater!

I was unaware of that test.

Like I said, you'd HAVE To have an animated studio that was GOOD. That is the key. Most CGI films are made by subpar studios.

I suggested an animated film was because impersonators are never as good as the original. I had in mind a cartoonish/stylized film, not something like Shrek or Resident Evil or motion capture. Old school snappy animation like that which was done in the cartoons of the 1940's. It could be a lot of fun and would be more true to the real actors than any impersonation ever could be.

Recycled gags or not A&C are always a great watch! Whenever Bud comes out of character and legitimately cracks a smile and laugh at Costello--it's always great, thanks for posting Mike!

A bit more on topic, while I am opposed to something like a Pixar A&C I do think Universal Monsters for kids could work. Has anyone watched Super Hero Squad? It's a Marvel cartoon that revolves primarily around the Avengers and depicts the characters as kids. I actually watched some of it by accident and for a real kid's show (unlike Avengers and other adult themed toons) it's incredibly well written with some good laughs and clever concepts.

Why you couldn't have a show like this with all our favorite monsters as "kids" is beyond me. If 6 year olds can watch Hulk get kicked out of the library for eating books, than they can surely have some fun watching Dr Frankenstein's experiments go wrong or having a Wolf Man that does very dog like things...like sniff everyone and bite mail men.

There is more than 1 way to make monsters relevant to the younger crowd. I'm not opposed to  that as long as it's done with care.
