Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes; Time to buy?
« on: June 19, 2012, 07:17:37 AM »
I'm seeing this set on both DVD and Bluray is now listed at 50.00 or less. It was around 100.00 last fall. Is this a temp drop or is it indeed coming down to stay?

It may be only a temporary drop, however, if you can get it, please do. Highly recommended.

I'm hoping to get it before the price goes back up.

I suggested the Holmes figures to Diamond.

Anybody have the 5 (I think it's 5?) disc set (the one amazom has for $50)? Are they flippers? DVD 9, or 18? I'd like to get the single movie discs, but they cost 4 times as much.

Target has the single movie discs in 2 packs sometimes. I have 4 of the films from that way. It evens out about the same IF they do them all.

There's also 4 disc/movie sets that make up the 12 Universal films.

The 2 pack I speak of from Target has 4 films total. One has the original and a later 40's film and one has Baskervilles with a later one. I guess they must have them mixed with the Fox and Universals. I never knew they weren't all made at one studio. I wonder how they got the rights to have them all together. The Pink Panther has a film or two not in the box set because of different studios making them.

Mike, I have the 5 disc set and they are NOT flippers. All but disc 5 have three films each on them. Disc 5 has two films and bonus material. They look pretty decent to me, but my system tends to make everything look pretty sharp (Oppo player and Sharp Quattron).

Now I wonder if the 2 movie discs are the way to go with 3 per disc being more compressed....I'm surprised they didn't just use the same discs in the box set. Authoring ain't cheap.

The Pink Panther has a film or two not in the box set because of different studios making them.
"Inspector Clouseau," with Alan Arkin, isn't included in the boxed set because, frankly, most fans hate the film. It wasn't directed by Blake Edwards, it didn't have Sellers, Herbert Lom, or Burt Kuwok. All the Sellers films (and "Clouseau") were made and originally released by United Artists. "The Return of the Pink Panther" was co-produced with ITC, as there was a plan to launch a "Pink Panther" TV-series for England's ITV. The film was such a huge hit that production on "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" started almost immediately, instead of the TV-series. That's how ROTPP ended up at Focus Films (a division of NBC/Universal), and isn't part of the boxed set. "Curse of the Pink Panther" isn't part of the boxed set because it's even more hated than "Clouseau." The three "Panthers" released after Sellers' death were made by MGM/United Artists. MGM released them all on DVD.

However, an "Ultimate Collection" exists which has everything, except ROTPP, including "Curse ...," "Son of the Pink Panther," and the two Steve Martin abominations (made by MGM/Columbia Pictures). And, there's a third one of those coming in 2013-- apparently, Steve Martin doesn't fear eternal hellfire!
TRIVIA TIME: Peter Sellers was brought in as a last-minute replacement on "The Pink Panther," as Peter Ustinov walked off the film, refusing to be just "comic relief." Sellers' psychic told him to take the part and "make it yours."
Geoffrey Rush did a spot-on Clouseau in "The Life & Death of Peter Sellers," but turned down the role of Clouseau for the 2006 reboot. He chose wisely.

Ditto for me too.

What's the deal with the Legend Films Basil Rathbone Sherlocks? Are some of these films PD? How are their restorations? Most of their stuff looks pretty good.

Finally! I've been a fan of these films since I was a young boy. I wanted the Blu-Ray set, but it was a bit too pricey. Now its more reasonable.

Thanks so much for the heads-up on this guys.  I've been wanting it too for some time.  I ordered the DVD set from Amazon last Friday for $56.00.  I think the Blu-Ray was only slightly more, but I don't have a player yet.  These films mean a great deal to me.  I used to watch them with my dad every Saturday night back in the early '70s.  It'll be great to have them all in this great set.
