Any Terry Gilliam fans?
« on: May 27, 2012, 10:37:05 AM »
I suppose Terry Gilliam isn't "technically' a director of horror movies, but really how can you classify the guy? His movies all have a horrific element, whether it's absurdly gratuitous violence (Jaberwocky) or the horrors inflicted upon children (Big Fish). I can get  a handle on what Tim Burton is doing fairly easily-he's the Edward Gorey/ Charles Addams of the film world. You know you're getting dark/quirkly/a little absurd with his films. Terry Gilliam? Entertaining, challenging and upsetting are all words that come to mind for his work. Aside from a tendency towards elaborate and fanciful art direction, you know a Terry Gilliam film more because of what it's not than what it is.

Any thoughts on Terry's work?
Supernatural, perhaps; baloney, perhaps not.

He's an incredible cartoonist. I know his work more from that field than from film.

When Terry is on he's the best in the world at what he does.  He's one of a kind filmmaker with a great imagination. I enjoy most his films. He's made some films that have missed the mark, but are still fun to watch once. Tideland is the only film I really hated.

There have been elements of horror in almost everyone of his films.  I never miss one of his films.

I haven't seen all of his films, but I've enjoyed the ones I've watched, especially "Jabberwocky" (it ran at one theater in NJ that only played it during the day, then ran porn at night!), "Time Bandits," and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."
