Non-Monster movie thread???
« on: May 29, 2012, 06:13:43 PM »
I don't understand this new forum, some movies mentioned, or moved, as MIB3 and Battleship all have monsters in it unless we are not considering Aliens monster related. I'm confused.  ??? ??? ???

I can understand GI Joe and James Bond, Avengers...mmmmmmmmmmmmmm...don't know, somewhere in the middle.

Well, IMDb lists Men In Black III as " Action | Comedy | Sci-Fi"

Battleship is "Action | Sci-Fi | Thriller"

I think most of the movies we discuss are somehow related to monsters, but some aren't really horror films or monster movies, they are other movies with monsters in them.  IMDb isn't necessarily the sole authority on it, but in general, this is the "non-horror" forum.

That might need to be the distinction, then. Because "Wrath of the Titans" has monsters, as do Terry Gilliam's "Jabberwocky" and "Time Bandits." Maybe the headers should be "Classic Horror Movies," "Modern Horror Movies," and "Non-Horror Movies"? For the other threads, like "Toys" and "Memorabilia," I believe monsters are still the prime factor.

I've seen forums just multiply and it starts to get confusing with all of the sub forums etc etc. Sometimes, the simpler the better. I can pick apart the "monster" movie forum and find similar movies. Plus, I always thought Sci Fi and Horror movies kind of go together. They all contain monsters. Never thought MIB3 and Battleship would be in the same category as Favorite biker movies or The Dictator.

Well, even there...

I moved the threads, and so here's my thinking on it.

The "line" is a fuzzy one, and that's why I drew it a little on the conservative side. These "non-monster" items aren't banished from the site, and the new forums don't exclude them from serach, google indexing, etc.  But where does everyone else draw the line?  I mean take Beanie and Cecil. Cecil is a dragon, a dragon can be thought of as a monster.  Sure, he's a cute monster, but so is Milton the Monster, Groovie Ghoulies, Kooky Spookies, etc. Why is Cecil not a monster if those other cute monsters are?  OK, so Milton is a Frankenstein monster, and the Ghoulies are classic monsters.

Dick Tracy isn't a monster, but his villians can be considered monsters.  Batman is a Bat and bats are traditional Halloween characters, and so why isn't Batman a monster?  Colorform Aliens are sometimes cute and sometimes monstery, so since some of them are cute aliens and Teletubbies are cute aliens, why aren't Teletubbies monsters?  If Dinosaurs are monsters then why isn't Barney a monster?  For that matter, Cookie Monster is a monster, and so is Oscar the Grouch, so Sesame Street is also a monster show.

It's not REALLY that big of a deal. We didn't go through all the threads on the UMA and decide what to move and what not to move. I just moved a few threads from the other forums to give a general idea of what the forum was for, and beyond that it's not really important where they end up.  If more than one thread gets started for a movie, in one forum or another, that's not a bid deal either.  Hopefully nobody will intentionally try and be disruptive and start threads all over the place to prove that it's not an exact science, we already know that.

The subject of what to do about topics that aren't exactly on-point at the UMA has been discussed from time to time for several years. In the past, we've decided to do nothing. This time we decided to go ahead and try this.  We don't mind if you guys discuss whatever you want to discuss, except what has been outlined as "off limits" subjects, to maintain a generally friendly place to escape from the reality of the world around us a bit, into the hobby we all share and enjoy.

There are things that are of mutual interest, that aren't necessarily monsters or horror.  Many of us like Super Heroes, Adventure films, Three Stooges, and so much more.  But sometimes there aren't many modern horror movies coming out to talk about, or the ones that are coming out aren't as interesting as other movies that are non-horror, or whatever.  In those times, it looks less like a monster/horror forum, and more like something else.  So the idea is to keep it a little more on-topic on the other boards, and give us all a little more freedom to explore and discuss the other interests we share.

Initially, we set these up as sub-forums, but there was no way to make them accessible from each of the forums that might contribute to them, so we promoted them to regular status.  That also helps convey the idea that these discussions are welcomed and encouraged.  The "monster" designation instead of "horror" is just a matter of keeping it consistent with the other forum names, and group name.  I see what you mean about it being a bit confusing though....  thanks for the input, we'll think about that.

Well, in the realm of modern horror, exploitation films are more similar to horror movies than science fiction, in the same way that sci-fi and classic horror are related.  Modern horror magazines and websites tend to review exploitation films alongside horror films, and not sci-fi.

As far as creating more forums, that is a function of growth.  For whatever reason, forums may have the capacity for almost unlimited posts and posters, but they have an invisible ceiling that comes into play.  When they get over-crowded, people start to fight a bit, some people leave, the forum doesn't grow and get more posters, instead it sees and increase in fighting and discord.  The occasional new forum let's us grow in a healthy way, and helps reduce fighting and discord.  You may or may not agree with that, but the statistics, history of this forum, and our observations of how it works all support that concept.

I figured that. And, really, it makes sense from the standpoint of consistency. But, "Non-Monster Movies" is confusing in that, yes, "Battleship," "Wrath of the Titans," and "Men In Black 3" have monsters/aliens in them. For my 2-cents' worth, I'd say leave things as you have them and give everyone a chance to adjust.

Look at the forum stats.

http://www.universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?action=stats

In 2009, we had 68,204 posts and 4,859,535 page views.
In 2010, we started some new forums, and it went to 80,171 new posts and 6,093,752 page views.
In 2011, we didn't start any new forums.  We went back down to 68,352 posts, but we had 7,476,369 page views. 2.6 million more page views than 2009, but only 148 more posts.

That means we need to start some new forums, so some of those lurkers will find things to post about.  This seemed like the direction things were moving, and the area that seemed most likely for expansion.

This isn't something we monitor closely or obsess over.  Our goal isn't to grow the UMA as fast or as much as possible.  But in order to stay healthy and viable, a forum has to grow a little, and every time it becomes a little different, and it's a little harder for people to easily read everything they are accustomed to reading, it does annoy some people a bit.  That's understandable.

I was only referring to the three "Movie" sections.
