Three of the greatest contributors to the sci-fi genre have intersected paths, and it may not be for the best.  Guillermo del Toro, mastermind behind Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy, has announced that Ridley Scott’s upcoming film Prometheus may have inadvertently put the final nail in the coffin of his long-developed film based on a classic H.P. Lovecraft novella.  All that is a mouthful, so let me explain a bit how this happened.

Over the last few years, del Toro has been vocal about his desire to bring Lovecraft’s novella At the Mountains of Madness to the big screen, but apparently this has been in development for over a decade.  However, due to the subject matter, its massive set pieces, and the fact that it would have to be rated R (come on, it’s Lovecraft), the studio executives at Universal were hesitant to give the film a green light.  So, while he still planned on fighting for the film’s creation, del Toro went about making other films, namely his upcoming sci-fi film Pacific Rim.

In the meantime, Ridley Scott, director of two of the most important sci-fi films of all-time (Alien and Blade Runner), moved on with his plans to make Prometheus.  While the title doesn’t seem to have any correlation between the Lovecraft novella, del Toro begs to differ. Seeing an early premiere of the film, del Toro seems to think that Scott’s film is too close to the vision he had for the Lovecraft work.

Well, that really stinks. Universal wouldn't greenlight ATMOM with Tom Cruise as its star, but a reboot of "Van Helsing" is their idea of brilliant filmmaking?
