NO MORE MONSTERS??
« on: March 07, 2012, 07:21:41 PM »
WE ALL LOVE THE CLASSIC MONSTERS THATS WHY WERE HERE,
BUT DO WE REALLY NEED ANY MORE CREATURE/ FRANKENSTEIN & MUMMY FIGURES ETC,
IN OUR COLLECTIONS WE ALL OWN MORE THEN A FEW OF ANY OF THESE ALREADY DON'T WE??

THE QUESTION IS IF THE COMPANYS STILL WANT TO MAKE THEM NOW OR IN THE FUTURE,
ARE WE STILL GOING TO RUSH OUT AND BUY THEM OR IS IT WE HAVE SEEN IT ALL BEFORE AND WILL AGAIN & AGAIN...

I also collect "Star Wars" action figures. I have about 547 Darth Vader figures. When #548 comes out, I'll buy it, too!
I think I only have about 10 Dracula figures and maybe 5 Frankensteins. Yes, if they put out more, and I like them, I'll buy them, too!

What of the new fans?
Someone starting to collect today may not have the funds to buy older items.
If nobody new collected they would have to keep reissuing classic films...everyone interested would already own them.

i think you may have missed the point i am trying to make,
i am a collector myself and have been for many years just trying to say,
there is a big difference between hoaders and collectors,

and no i never yell i leave that to people who have nothing to say.

Hey man, I get what you're trying to say. I've said the same thing to friends of mine. They get all excited about a figure or a model of a character I feel I already have faithfully represented in my collection. They buy--I pass. When they come over, they always comment on how "different" my collection is vs. theirs. The reason mine is different is because I dont buy every single Creechie or Frankie piece that comes out. If I dont like it, then I dont buy it. Instead--I branch out and the funds I would've spent on Wolfman #548 gets spent on a monster that I dont have anything of.

There are always next generations of fans. With Monsters, I used to worry a bit. Thinking we werent siring any new monster kids into the hobby. I used to think that the Jason, Michael, Freddy kids wouldnt want Dracula, Frankenstein, and Wolfman. But, just like I get to a point where I would rather buy a "Wasp Woman" resin kit(if one existed:hint, hint paging Joe Laudati or Jeff Yagher) rather than Frankenstein in the fire pit variant figure, those Jason and Freddy guys eventually branch out too. They'll eventually give a little "nod" in their collections to the old horror films. Horror always sells. Even the creaky old guys hiding in the catacombs of the broken battlements of a certain count's castle in Trans-yyyaaaalll-vania. Then there are folks who collect EVERYTHING  of a specific character. I always liked looking at those collections. Because they are different from mine. Kreature Kid's all Creature snapshots are very impressive. Monsters will never die as long as there are fanboys who give them voice.

I mostly don't buy new monster toys, just old ones.  I still buy old ones that I don't have.  I will continue to buy old ones that I don't already have.  I doubt that I'll ever have all the old ones.  Is it hoarding or collecting?  I consider it collecting.  Others may consider it hoarding.  It's my hobby, and I enjoy it.  It gives me pleasure. I'm obsessive/compulsive, and always have been.  I could spend the money on a psychiatrist to try and not be OCD, but I'd rather just spend it on my collection. If it weren't this, it would be something else, and likely as not, something less healthy than buying  monsters.

I've thought about it quite a lot, and I'm at peace with my OCD, my collecting, and with those who would deem it "hoarding".  I'm at peace that I would rather buy old monster toys than feed starving children.  I don't feel any guilt about it.  I don't feel guilt about buying new monster toys sometimes, even if they are made by overworked and underpaid children in slavelike conditions.  And when I say all that, it may sound as if I'm being sarcastic, but I'm not.

Well said. That's precisely my thinking as well.

I'm not a "character" collector anyway, meaning I don't go after all Mummy items for example. I'm more interested in completing the set of all six Hasbro Mystery games of which the Mummy was one. As a result, I really don't care if a new Mummy figurine is released.

i think when you first start collecting you try and by all you can get your hands on like i did,
many years later i had to downsize my collection and it was the best thing i ever did
as i appreciated the items i owned alot more and still do.

And we get the pick of their collections on eBay.

The sad fact of the matter is, unless new life is breathed into the monsters every few years be it by dvd's, toys, etc. they will eventually die out. I am a huge fan of old time radio, but hardly anybody knows the names Fibber McGee and Molly, Ed Gardner, Fred Allen, Inner Sanctum, Vic and Sade, etc. these are characters of a medium from a different generation. Just imagine if you were old enough to have seen vaudeville, and loved certain actors or acts from that era. Now it's all gone except for memories and print media articles. At least with the monsters there's a large "filmic" history to draw upon, as well as the merchandise, versus just audio recordings or print write ups.
