Happy 102nd Birthday to Carla Laemmle!

Wishing a happy birthday today to Carla Laemmle, the niece of Golden Age Universal's Carl Laemmle. Carla turned 102 today. She was in Lon Chaney's PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in 1925 and she was the funny girl wearing glasses and reading from the guidebook in the bumping-along coach in DRACULA (1931). Miss Laemmle has published at least a couple books of her memories. She must be one of the few living people who saw Lon Chaney Sr. perform in person!
It was a privilege to be able to talk to Carla at Monsterpalooza this past April--she's bright and sharp, and she's got a great smile and beautiful eyes which make her look decades less than her century+ of life. Here's a photo I took of Carla surrounded by the descendents of the actors her Uncle Carl made famous--from left, Bela Lugosi's son, Bela G. Lugosi with his daughter, Lon Chaney Sr.'s great-grandson/Lon Chaney Jr's grandson, Ron Chaney with 2 daughters, and Boris Karloff's daughter, Sara Karloff--a historic moment, seeing this much Universal history gathered together in one place!

Great that at 102, she is still trucking along and is well received by monster fans. An amazing link to the Golden Age of monsters.

wow, talk about family royality, what history those siblings have to pass on to our generation. Bela Jr. is like a twin of his father, there's no mistaking who he is related to. Sarah hasnt changed in years, and L.Chaney jr grandson must love his family heritage.

Spent a few moments with her last week. What a doll!
By the way, have you guys checked out GROWING UP WITH MONSTERS? It's a very cool book by MS. LAEMMLE illustrated by the GREAT JACK DAVIS!

Yep, got that one, Danny! A double treat, with Carla's memories and the Jack Davis fun coming at us simultaneously! VERY cool thing indeed.
