Flood
« on: June 20, 2008, 12:29:44 AM »
I did some reporting today on the flooding in Missouri.  I'm going to share some of the pictures I took.  No monsters in these pics, but they're interesting nonetheless.

I've never reported on a flood before.  It's a surreal scene.  Homes surrounded by water.  Mail boxes and swing sets half-submerged.  People using canoes to get from one house to another.  A road disappearing into the river.

Here is the scene from the road, North Shore Dr.

This is Tom, one of the flooded residents.  He's keeping his good humor despite the situation.

Tom's going to use this canoe to take me on a tour of the neighborhood.

Here I am taking notes before beginning my journey.

I've never been in a canoe before.  I was lucky I didn't fall in the water getting in and out.

As we paddled along, I felt like I was in the Louisiana bayou.  There were strange bird calls and a generally eerie atmosphere.

I talked to the residents who were staying in their homes despite the flood.  These are "river people."  They have been through this before and will go through it again.  It's a life they choose.  One of them described the flood as "depressing and fun."

Here are some views inside and outside their homes.

The whole experience was more fascinating and strange than sad.  The people seem to be in good spirits, despite their expectation of having about three feet of water on their ground floor within a few days.  I think they take pride in fighting Mother Nature and coming out on top, if a little soggy.

So Tom paddled me back to "shore" where my yellow bug awaited to take me to higher ground.

The end.

Wow, how sad.  Hopefully all of our UMA Brothers and Sisters are far enough away from this area.

Thank you for sharing this, Raymond. The river people look like a really brave bunch. If I see water rising around my home, I'm packing up everything and heading for higher ground immediately!
Thankfully, we haven't had many problems with flooding in our area. Our last major flood took place long before I was born, back in 1937, when 18 inches of rain fell over a period of about 2 weeks, flooding the Ohio River for several miles.

Wow. Amazing photos. Sad photos. Just another reminder that nothing on Earth here is forever. There could have been carded AHI's somewhere in all that devastation. Mint under water. Murky dirty water.

I wonder what the "river people" thought about darling wee Ray's talons--but then they are used to the rising water flushing out the seldom seen odd creature or two.

What's bizarre is 'river people' know the risks involved, lose everything, and keep going back. I would not want to be an insurance company.

I have an Auntie who owns a camp grounds near the Susquehanna River in Sunbury, PA and she has been flooded out many times over the years and always goes right back to the same location. I have a very vivid childhood memory of being knocked on my arse by an electrical shock given by a badly grounded pinball machine that had gone through one of the many floods.

It's just something in their blood.  Like collecting monsters, making movies, or anything else.  They've just got to be on that river.  That's why they call themselves river people.
