I believe it much predates the TV program (actually any TV program).

Festivus predates the TV program, too.  It was a thing before Seinfeld.

How can that possibly hold a candle to gathering around an unadorned metal pole and airing your grievances?

You're right. That is indeed a tough act to beat. Twould truly take a bevy of really lithe and lovely witches to pull off such a feat.

Resurrecting an old thread instead of creating a new one, since the topic remains the same. I'm personally getting very excited about my "holiday season" starting in just 5 weeks from now. I'll explain...

I do a huge amount of decorating for Halloween, and even more for Christmas. A more moderate amount for Thanksgiving (only so much you can do with that holiday decorating-wise). For the longest time I've referred to the "holiday season" as all of October, November, and December. I'm all decorated for Halloween on Oct 1st, then the day after Halloween it all comes down and the Thanksgiving stuff goes up. The 3 days after Thanksgiving are literally 16 to 18 hrs. per day decorating in order to put up all the Christmas stuff.

Starting last year though, partly due to impatience and partly due to nostalgia, I've expanded the "holiday season" to include September, and there's a horror-related reason why. On Sept. 5th, 1981, I went to the local drive in with my cousin and my best friend in high school at the time. We were all huge horror movie fans and the drive in had an awesome five movie/all night showing:

Night of the Living Dead
Massacre At Central High
The Rats Are Coming, the Werewolves Are Here (love that title!)
Flesh Grinders (aka Corpse Grinders)
Last House On the Left II (aka Bay of Blood)

Lots of pizza and sodas and a great time watching horror movies all night!

So now, every Sept. 5th, I "celebrate and recreate" that night. I grab a pizza, some snacks, etc. and watch the movies back to back. If it's nice out, I sit on my balcony and watch the movies through the balcony door. I also decorate with printed ads from the newspaper for the drive in rom back when the movies first played.

And then on Sept. 6th (in 1978) was the premiere of the original Dr. Strange tv movie. Why the hell not? Let's make it an event too! So on Sept. 6th I decorate with various Dr. Strange and Dormammu action figures and comics and have some treats and watch the original tv show on DVD.

Then I had an idea! The autumn Equinox falls on Sept. 21st or 22nd roughly each year (this year on the 22nd at 8:03 PM CST). So...why not celebrate the start of the holiday season of fall with the movie Equinox on the equinox? Makes sense to me! And then that gives me a week to get out all the Halloween stuff, shop for new stuff, and take my time decorating so it's ready by Oct. 1st (so I don't have to do it all in one or two very long days). During that time (Sept. 23rd-Sept. 30th), I start watching a horror movie every night - sort of like an appetizer - to "prime" myself for the Halloween season. I start with some of the less major horror films and save my top 60 movies for the month of October (usually 2 a night, though some nights may be more or less, like when I do the Phantasm I - IV marathon night!).

Halloween night always includes watching Its The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, then the Paul Lynde Halloween Special (a classic!), then Mad Monster Party (I've watched this every year for over 50 years now!) and then a final horror movie to cap off the season. If I don't find a new horror movie to buy for Halloween night (it's getting hard to find ones I don't have on DVD or Blu-ray by now), then I default to the original Halloween movie.

So yeah, I am getting stoked! Only 5 weeks till my "holiday season" kicks off!
