The crazy heat finally arrived here on Long Island today. I put an A/C unit in my 88 year old mom's attached apartment, but we're not so lucky in our part of the house...don't anticipate much sleeping going on here tonight. I called  Zacherley today to see how he's making out in the city [where it's even worse!] and he was fine, wisely staying close by the A/C unit in his apartment. My big bonus of the day was my initial call inspired him to call me a number of times more during the day....One of the calls was to ask me if i was into comic books as a kid...specifically, Captain America. I could almost hear Zach's jaw drop when i told him; ''Hell, yeah! Joe Simon [Cap's creator] lived in my neighborhood in Woodbury NY when i was a kid!''

Anyway, one of Joe's kids asked Zach to please send Joe an autographed pic of himself, as Joe was a big fan of Zach's! He obliged and in return Joe Simon sent Zach an inscribed hardcover book about him and Jack Kirby and their impact on the comics industry.  After hearing of my connection with the Simon's, Zach says he's going to send the book to me! I've always kicked myself for never getting Joe's autograph before he moved from the neighborhood when i had the chance...leave it to Zach to fulfill yet another unrealized dream for me...John Zacherle, the gift that  NEVER stops giving!

Mike, congrats!! Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. BTW...........ZACH RULES!!

Bout 102 degrees here South of Kansas City today...........got my electric bill for last 30 days today. Was mildly suprised! Only $147!  I guess installing a nine thousand dollar super-dupper heat pump helped abunch! LOL!   Love, Buddy

Ooooh bigbud- That heat pump is gonna pay for itself in a couple more years, sounds like a good investment :)
My sister lives in Florida and her electric bill for June was over $600!!! Whew! That's painful!

If I didn't have A/C I'd be dead by now. What I didn't expect though, was that my 8 year old house (which we sold last year) would cost MORE to cool than my current home, which is 25 years old and 400 Sq Ft bigger. So much for the new "energy efficient" building codes. I'm saving about $100 per month on my electric bill.

Gary:

Do you have more trees and shade now? Older areas tend to have more mature shade trees.

Were your old ceilings higher? More ceiling fans in your new house? Attic fan? Whirly birds on the roof? All these things tend to make a difference.

Keep cool.

No shade trees............sadly. I'd love to change that but I'll be dead before anything I plant today grows high enough.

Last house was a 2 story, but not a full 2nd story(perimeter rooms only with the middle open to the lower story), this one is a single story, but with vaulted ceilings as high as the other house and with 2 skylights (which the other house didn't have, and which do allow in more heat). I'd call that a wash.

No attic/roof fans in either house. Another wash.

Every room in every home in South Florida has a ceiling fan, so that's a wash too.

Old house was 400 Sq Ft smaller, so clear advantage over my present abode.

Conclusion?? They just don't build 'em like they used to.

Was in a quiet doctor's office last week when an old lady in a wheel chair blurted out "We get 2 weeks a year when the temperature is around 80.......the rest of the year  Kansas is uninhabitable!"  The whole room cracked up!   Buddy
