I'm gla to see that it's coming out finally, but Criterion always over prices their releases. I still do not own the original The Blob for that reason. I refuse to pay what they ask for a movie.
Listen to them. Children of the Night. What music they make!

Im with  monsterphile on this one. Box-art should be targeting the fans that have been waiting for this release,

Check out the Criterion half price sales at B&N a couple of times a year. I'm gonna wait till Nov. to pick up IOLS.

The box art shows half of a human hand and half of a monkey's paw, with a human skull in the background. The film's about a vivisectionist's experiments in turning animals into humans through repeated, horrifically painful, surgeries.

Yeah, I don't get it, either.

And your point would beeeeeee.............???  ;)

Cool!  I just found out about this.  Pre-ordered!  And a prediction that the Rondo Awards will give this the best DVD release next time around, since we've been waiting so impatiently.  I would have gone with the old poster for the cover art too, but no biggie.  It has plenty of extras too.  A little treat for Halloween this year!

I usually prefer the original poster art for cover design, with a few exceptions. The Corman Poe DVD's from awhile back sported some pretty nice montage work. Some of the Criterion cover art from the past few years has been questionable but the content is just about always great. The covers for such films as Diabolique threw me at first, but that one's kinda grown on me. The Barnes & Noble sale is a great way to stock up on some favorites. I destroyed a couple of Benjamins there last week.   sfsrefs

D'oh, I forgot to chime in that I'm totally pumped about IOLS being released on Blu!

It's never gonna be a deal breaker for anybody, but having some nice cover art is the icing.

Actually since I'm a visual maniac, it can be.
Back in the 90's a laserdisc of "Them!" was released with a godawful airbrush abomination for cover art. It was like a bad 70's poster for a bad 70's movie. I literally couldn't bring myself to buy it. When Amazon put up a pre-order for the DVD, they posted that same cover which drove me nuts. I was ecstatic when the disc was finally released with a totally fun repro of the original poster art.

Dlh, do you ever go this route?

I only roll my own when I don't have cover art (DVD-R from somebody's LD, VHS, etc.)

Thanks for the suggestion, Wich2. Had some trouble opening that link. There is also a collection on Flickr with "alternate" Criterion covers for films yet to be released by the esteemed company.
Interesting example, Monsters for Sale. It's not a bad photo but has little to do with the movie!

Been a long wait, but Criterion finally has this listed on their website. Been waiting to fill this hole in my '30s horror movie collection!
