« on: July 15, 2011, 06:54:48 PM »
Been a long wait, but Criterion finally has this listed on their website. Been waiting to fill this hole in my '30s horror movie collection!

That's great news and I like this part too:

"•New video conversation among filmmaker John Landis (An American Werewolf in
London), Oscar-winning makeup artist Rick Baker (An American Werewolf in London,
Videodrome), and genre expert Bob Burns"

I would have preferred poster art for the DVD instead of this though:

Really! I don't know what any of that has to do with this movie?

It almost looks like a design for a book jacket.

I guess you guys haven't seen a lot of Criterion DVDs? All their cover artwork is always made to look like film school art. They've been doing it for years. Thanks for posting this! I'm really excited. This has been the number one requested title since the Rondos began. Oh, and Criterion discs have always been expensive from the days of laserdiscs up until today. They try to be classy, high end intellectual releases. For example, when you put the disc in you won't be immediately bombarded with, "ARE YOU READY FOR BLU-RAY HIGH DEF?" followed by loud explosions and crashes. You won't get previews for 6 other new releases either. They take a very scholarly approach to each film. So this is good news. "Island of Lost Souls" will get the treatment it deserves!

BTW, Barnes & Noble bookstore stocks a lot of Criterion Discs and frequently has 50% Criterion titles sales. I buy most of my Criterion discs there. I got the Japanese "House" for $15 not long ago.

The box art shows half of a human hand and half of a monkey's paw, with a human skull in the background. The film's about a vivisectionist's experiments in turning animals into humans through repeated, horrifically painful, surgeries.

Yeah, I don't get it, either.

Put some enthusiasm into it! I've seen more life in people after I've had them impaled.

I meant no relationship to images from the film (or posters, etc.). It makes nice paperback book art (though not a movie tie-in ed.), but I like a more traditional approach for the DVD covers.
