I am glad to see someone started a thread on the model company that started it all for us.

One was sorely needed. Just about every fellow who grew up in the baby boom years has fond memories of Aurora.

Great job on the Superman kit, it really brings back memories.
I love my Aurora monsters, but I have to say that my favorite kit has always been Aurora's Superman.  For me the combination of the sculpt and the box art hold a special place in my childhood.  I remember seeing the kit at the Paducah, KY Sears and begging my Dad to buy it for me.  He did, and then I begged my older brother to put it together and my mother to paint it.  I still have it and display it proudly!

Yeah, the one I had later was the one with the Curt Swan cover. I love Curt, but that original "George Reeve-esque!"
box art is so great!

I wasn't the least impressed with the George Reeves' Superman TV show. As a result I prefer the later version of the kit with the Curt Swan box art myself. Superman is a comic character so he should be rendered with line art. And Curt Swan was the quintessential Superman artist.

Here's my Superman.
I remember my father would drive me to the next town over because they had a great hobby shop that carried the Aurora models. I would buy one and take it home and sit at the kitchen table stinking up the kitchen with glue and Testors enamels. I never did any tank or plane models but had tons of figure kits in the '60's and '70's.

I like your painting! I've always leaned to the type of gaudy colour schemes a kid would have used in the sixties for the Aurora figure kits. Adult paint jobs are far too often overly subdued.

Fun stuff, Mono! Yours is the later Supes head; I think the orgininal is, along with the '60's Captain Action mask, one of the best sculpts of Silver Age Kal ever done.

I'm not completely sure. But the Comic Scenes box that you posted certainly looks done by Curt Swan, and it features much better artwork than that on the box I posted.

In general the artwork on the Comic Scenes boxes that Aurora issued in the seventies was superb. Some of it was done by Neal Adams. Looking at the boxes makes me want to start adding those to my collection even though they're technically reissues. Here are a few more pics of these boxes I just lifted off the web:

My wife has a youthful soul...she says is "25" forever. She always says I'm the old one with my old school music and I'm three years older than her, which she always reminds me about.

Were all young, otherwise we wouldnt be doing this.Music & models-still makes me feel like I did 30 + years ago.
