A Christmas Story.......you'll shoot Frankenstein's eye out!
« on: December 28, 2010, 11:51:11 PM »
Spent the big day at the relatives and caught part of the 24 hour marathon of A Christmas Story. My relative has all the gadgets, so I had him go back and freeze frame on something I had missed in the hundreds of times I've seen this movie......Here's the scene; The boys have dived into the presents under the tree and Randy (Ralphie's little brother) has fallen asleep among the pile of Christmas loot.......well, Randy's head is laying immediately beside a full size , full coverage mask of Frankenstein! Never noticed that before!  Bud

I didn't think it was possible for me to love this movie more. But now I do.

Yep, it's there--I had forgotten

I think it came up in a discussion here grappling with the "what year does A Christmas Story take place in?" question.

I just watched that film on Christmas at a friend's house - that is the Savage Eye 'econo line' Frankenstein mask. Those were first available in 1976 I think. There were rubber Frankenstein masks around as early as the end of the 40s, however.

Shepherd was 10 (Ralphie's approx age) in 1931. But Wizard of Oz was '39 so it has to be later than that. No mention of WWII, so hard to call it '41 or later.

I think we just decided "the past."

Checking wikipedia: "Director Bob Clark stated in the film's DVD commentary that he and author Shepherd wished for the movie to be seen as "amorphously late 30s, early 40s." The film is not specifically about a given year, it is about a particular time in American family life. The film appears to be set roughly around the tail end of the Great Depression but before the United States involvement in World War II."

And as ultra cool it is to see a Frankenstein mask in this movie, the very first Frankenstein mask was the Don Post one from 1948.   So a wee bit unbelievable since this takes place in the early 40s but takes nothing away from how great this movie is for me.  Having the Frank mask in there makes it even greater.

DO you, after seeing the film about a thousand times. I realized that there is one very specif reference to the exact year which I believe was 39 or 40. It might be on the Ovalitine ring or around that moment in the film.

At least Bob Clark knew that Son of Frankenstein was form the same year that they referenced with Wizard Of Oz

By the way there is another odd anachronism in the film. The Micky Mouse mask is WAYYYYYYYYYYYY too new for the period. It's an early 80's head. The first Micky Mouse heads form the parks opening (15 years later) look like they are made of cloth.
The only reason there is a cross reference between Disney Studios (Mickey)  and MGM (Oz) is that MGM was making  the deal to license it's name for a DISNEY-MGM THEME PARK AT DISNEYWORLD. ALthough the deal wasn't finalized until 85 one can only imagine that the inclusion of Mickey Mouse in the parade was a goodwill gesture on the Disney Studio's part.

build the Disney MGM theme park in Florida shortly before the film was made in 1982

I think the Ovaltine Little Orphan Annie Secret Decoder Pin is dated 1943 as I recall.

Here is a pic (from the original owner) of my Savage eye econo Frank.   SE was the only company making Universal Frank masks when this movie was filmed.

In Shepard's original book,  The store window is mentioned as having Shirley Temple Dolls, and Dionne Quintuplet sets.  It also mentions that Santa's attendants are dressed as Snow White and the Dwarfs.  That would make it between 1934 and whatever time Snow White was released in 1937.  Ralphie might have gotten the FRANKENSTEIN mask in 1935.  As to CHRISTMAS STORY, my mom pegged the car as 1940.  She said it was "the spit" of their first car.
