Monsters For Sale

BigLots still has tons of $3.00 DVD's of all types.  I visited 2 stores that had set aside LARGE areas, with numerous tables and displays of the movies at $3.00 for 90% of the DVD's and $6.00 for double features.  I visited a 3rd store that had a tiny display with many movies I did not see at the other stores. I asked if they had another display somewhere.  The clerk told me no, that was all they had room to put out at any one time.  Man, did I want to rummage through their back room!

I picked up about 30 DVD's - many of them double features (and many of THOSE were $3.00).  No junk - all widescreen editions with extras, where available.  I won't buy full screen movies unless widescreen has not been issued.

Some of the movies I bought:

I Walked with A Zombie / The Body Snatcher - (2 discs - commentaries on both films)
Isle of the Dead / Bedlam - (2 discs - commentary on Bedlam)
The Killer Shrews / The Giant Gila Monster - (2 discs - B&W on 1 disc & Colorized on the 2nd disc - Plus extras)
Village of the Damned / Children of the Damned - (1 disc - With commentaries on both films)
Contact / Sphere - (double-sided disc, widescreen - commentaries on both films)
Return of the Vampire - (Columbia Studio official release - sadly, no extras)
Tremors
Tremors 3
Psycho II
Child's Play 2
Terror of Frankenstein - (made for TV, 1976)

Body Heat - (with 3 featurettes)
Good Night, and Good Luck - (commentary and featurette)
Lilith
Message In a Bottle - (commentary, featurette and deleted scenes)
My Dog Skip - (commentaries and deleted scenes)
National Lampoon's European Vacation - (commentary by Chevy Chase)
The Philadelphia Story - (2 disc edition)
The Right Stuff
Vantage Point - (2 disc edition)

Several other movies and...

The Sci-Fi Boys - (a 1 hr. 20 min documentary Featuring Peter Jackson, Ray Harryhausen, Ray Bradbury, Forrest J. Ackerman, Roger Corman, John Landis, Dennis Muren, Rick Baker, Donald F. Glut, Bob Burns and Paul Davids - who directed the fim - with over 1 hour of exras)

If you haven't seen this last film, I highly recommend getting it.  It is well worth the 3 bucks.  It is not just one of those little curiosities that you are glad you saw, but will never watch again.  This one will be watched more than once - Really great stuff.  (I almost put it back!)

I wnet to Big Lots Yesterday and they did have some halloween stuff.  They had most of the DVD's I saw before and few new titles.  They didn't have any of the monster cereals.

I did get the Sci-Fi Boys for $3.00.  I thought it was okay but didn't get that much out of it.  It doesn't have a into, body and conclusion.  The topics are all over the place and it's really unfocused.  I felt only a die hard fan would understand it.  A newbie would be lost.  The filmakers assume the audience know who these people are and why they are important.

Part of the movie is about, modern filmakers being influenced by classic films, amatuer film making,  growing up a genre fan, Forry Ackerman and Famous Monsters, B movies and what draws people to the genre.  The topics are all over the place and it doesn't flow well.

For $3.00 it's okay but I thought it was poorly edited.

Big Lots has been a HUGE resource for cheap dvds for me for all genres!

I'd hate to think of how many DVDs I've bought at BL in the last couple of years! The $5 discs at Walmart have been pretty good, too.

I'm with you, between the two stores, I have added quite a few within the last few years.  I say to myself, that's worth $3, before you know it, I'm walking out with $25 worth.  lol

Big Lots has been a bonus as far as adding to my DVD collection.

However, I did note that while my store sells most DVDs for $3.00 and newer ones for $5.00, I saw that another Big Lots had some of the $3 ones priced at $6 because they contained 2 films.  The Karloff ISLE OF THE DEAD double feature dvd is $3 at my Big Lots but was $6.00 at one in Hazelton, PA.

Today I picked up a copy of the 1988 version of "The Blob" at the local Dollar General Store. I also stopped by Big Lots, but all I found was a lone copy of the Warner Home Video Horror Double Feature that includes "It!" starring Roddy McDowall and "The Shuttered Room" with Gig Young. The disc was $6.00. There were a few of these available at Best Buy a couple of years ago, and I think they retailed for around $15.00 then. I haven't seen "It!" in at least twenty years, so I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

"It!" is fun. "Shuttered" just doesn't seem very HPL, to me, but few HPL adaptions do.

I wish BL would get the companion DVD, with "Chamber of Horrors"!

what is "It" with Roddy McDowell???

"It" with Roddy McDowell and Jill Hayworth is a goofy movie about a Golem on the loose.

I think it is available as a double feature horror DVD cheapie.

Not originally a cheapie ($15), but you can get it from BL for $3.

Is that the disc that also has "The Brides of Fu Manchu"? I got my copy at my local Big Lots last year I think.
